Are there really prescription plans that cover Viagra but not birth-control pills??

I was talking to a friend yesterday about insurance plans. He works for a catholic university. Vasectomies are not covered and neither are birth control pills unless prescribed for medical reasons other than preventing birth. (I cant recall his exact words, but it was something like that).

hmm. sounds to me like that shouldn't even be legal. sounds to me like mccain had it right in 2003, i just wish he'd be bold enough to fess up to his librul leanings in 2008

I don't know about illegal - if you work for faithbased companies - there are "accompanyments" that go along with that. An interesting fact about this is they are trying to pass live-in partnering coverage (as in same sex) very progressive for a catholic uni... but he also got in some hot water for taking the lord's name in vain in one class.

anyway - I digress. I just found it interesting.

My aunt works at a "faith based" Catholic hospital. Their insurance will not cover birth control pills unless you are prescribed them for something other than birth control.

Who is the insurance provider?

That is interesting, so McCain voted 5 years ago to require insurance providers cover birth control, but now he doesn't want to talk about it.

I don't know but I can find out from her. My other aunt is a pharmacist, I will investigate this matter further and report back.

Yes, The only thing that I can think of is because ED is a medical condition. In most cases, birth control is not a medical condition.

Many times, there are alot of insurace plans that will not pay to try and prevent a medical condition but will have no problem paying to treat the medical condition. I was looking into the same thing for stopping smoking, to see if insurance would pay for the pill or patch or something. And most will not, but they have no problem paying for the medical bills after I get cancer.

I've had 3 different employers since I've been married and three different plans - all of them have covered the pills. I always assumed that was the norm. I was clearly mistaken!
