Can you travel with the certificate?

We are going to Canada in Sept., I'm not sure when they are requiring passports, but as of now it's just birth certificates for driving over the boarder. So would the naturalization certificate work? I don't know if my husband will have it by then or not, but most likely he wouldn't have his new passport in time. So I'm curious about this, since they take away his 10 year PR card correct?

Does the naturalization certificate have a photo on it? Curious what the two photos are for. I believe it's just a piece of paper and not a card.

Yes, his certificate of naturalization will have his photo on it and that is THE document he will need to show if you're driving over the border. If he's flying he will need his US passport with him. If he doesn't have it by the time you're travelling he will not be allowed back.

If you're driving, the natz certificate will work if you are crossing a land border until JUne 2009. If you're flyng, you have to have the passport. You'll either have to go to Chicago to get it, or pay for a service to get it for you.

Last time I was at Niagara Falls, literally thousands of people were walking back and forth between the Canadian and American side so let us know how if is today. Long Lines? Inspections?

Doesn't seem to make any difference if you were born here or naturalized, still need the paperwork, here is the fee schedule and if you drive frequently can just get the card.

Make sure you get a zip lock bag to keep your passports dry, can get wet, ha, also good for cell phone and digital cameras, neither likes even a few drops of water.

"Routine Service (Form DS-11)

Non-Refundable

Application Fee Execution Fee Total

Passport Book (Age 16 & Older) $75 $25 $100

Passport Book (Under Age 16) $60 $25 $85

Passport Card (Age 16 & Older) $20 $25 $45

Passport Card (Under Age 16) $10 $25 $35

When applying at a Passport Agency, both the application fee and the execution fee are combined as one payment to the "U.S. Department of State."

When applying at an Acceptance Facility , pay the application fee to the "U.S. Department of State" and the execution fee to the facility where you are applying.

Routine Renewal by Mail (Form DS-82)

Non-Refundable

Total

Passport Book (Eligible adult applicants, see below) $75

Passport Card (Eligible adult applicants, see below) $20

Pay this fee to the "U.S. Department of State" as instructed on Form DS-82."

We drove over to Niagara in May and last year in Sept. and we didn't have long lines of cars at all. Maybe a five min. wait at most. May was off season though it seemed, so very not crowded at the falls, not like it was in Sept. I've never walked over the Rainbow Bridge before. I also didn't need a zip lock bag! Although, we haven't gone on the Maid of the Mist in years. We really like Niagara-on-the-Lake.

I drive back and forth frequently from Buffalo (Peace Bridge, not the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, but the PB is actually busier)

The most recent trip over was in mid June, on my way home from Toronto. It was midnight on a Friday and I waited half an hour in the line of cars at the border crossing. The border patrol officer was questioning each car ahead of us for something like 2/3 minutes each (which is a lot!) . When he finally got to us, he was like, "Citizenship?" US, "Where are coming from" Toronto. "Do you have anything to declare" No. "Have a good night" Thanks. It was just me and my two kids in the car, so maybe we looked fresh faced (or just tired) but it was not a particular hassle, just long.

I have never actually been pulled over, but most people I know have. Once my 70-year old grandmother was pulled over, her car put up on a lift and the whole thing inspected. It is a real pain if that happens.

Me, too, love Niagara on the Lake. I also love the Shaw Festival. It is gorgeous in the summer. Canada is so much cleaner and more respectful than the US (huge generalization, I know, but all indications seem to point in that direction).

Just look at the difference between Ft. Erie Canada and Buffalo or Niagara Falls NY and Niagara Falls ON

Never been to Niagara Falls NY, but Niagara Falls ON is definitely not clean. I did go to NY City two summers ago and was very surprised at how un-dirty it was.
