Hello fellow VJers.

My K1 interview date is coming up and I started to pack my stuff to bring to the U.S.

I have a question to people who are already done with K1 and AOS process.

The question is:

Are there any documents that I should bring to the U.S. for the purpose of AOS?

Since we have to start our AOS process three months after the arrival, I want to bring necessary docs that I can only get in my homecountry such as a birth certificate.

Thank you

Nao

Arigatou,

As for moving, check around for prices. My kids and I lived there for 15 years and had many things to move back to the US and used a shipping company as they were cheaper than any other way (and they did a great job!) When my husband moved here in Feb., he brought some things, but mailed most of it little by little over the course of many months while waiting for our K-1 approval. Books and paper items are cheaper to mail bulk/book rate, but keep important papers with you (don't even put them in your checked baggage) Depending on what kinds of things you're moving, most moving companies will come out and give you a free estimate.

My husband also brought his international license. It was helpful until we got his state driver's license.

If you want more detailed info, feel free to IM me :)

"Since we have to start our AOS process three months after the arrival,"

Unless it's something YOU HAVE to do in 3 months there is no time limit on you filing to adjust status.

You just have to marry within 90 days!

Dear All:

Thank you a lot for giving me some ideas on what to bring with me to the U.S. :star:

I think I will make sure to bring a birth certificate, vaccination card, certificate of resident cancellation and X ray for AOS. With regard to X ray, you are talking about the one which will be taken for the visa purpose? I did not know that they return it to us after the interview...

Other than that, I already have California Driver's lisence and university transcript in the U.S. since I went to a university in the U.S. So, I think it will be ok.

Dear Moto-zutto:

I will use Postal Service(JP) to ship out my stuff. Since I will only ship out winter clothes and things that I do not need right away, I will use vessel shipment, which is a lot cheaper than air shipment. You can find the specification on JP's website if you are interested. I will bring all my summer clothings and important stuff that I do not wanna lost with me. When you choose which airline you will use, you should contact them and see how much each laggage can weigh. Each airline has different policy on the weight of laggage.

With regard to the driver's lisence, I already have California State Driver's license since I was in the U.S. for five years to go to a university there. I think you should obtain international driver's lisence before you leave as u2rsobad advises. If I were you, I would definately do that. :star:

Dear Haole:

Thanks for letting me know that we do not have to start AOS within three months. I did not knwo that. So, we have to get married within three months but not start the AOS process within three months. Since I want a work authorization ASAP, I think we will start AOS ASAP.

Thank you all. :star:

Have a great day.

Good idea applying for AOS, AP [advanced parole]and EAD [employment authorization document] ASAP.

As soon a you get your marriage certificate you can apply. As someone said be sure you have the DS 3025 vaccination records in hand. Get a TB skin test at your local health department when you get here. Get DS 3025 tranfered to a I-693 by a USCIS designated civil surgeon.

That info will get you on the right track!
