george bush hates kansas. that's why we have so many tornadoes.

 My wife's car got hail-damaged last Wednesday in the big hail storm. I think he hates Peruvians, too.

no hail up here, it all passed south of us.

Interesting topic and one I never really thought of even though I live very near the disaster areas.

Maybe one reason the midwest takes it in stride is because this is not the first time, nor the last time we will flood. Ironically, when I think back to the worst flooding I can remember, we still didn't have the celebrities or the president come tour or anything. The cities of Missouri banded together to help one another in sand bagging, rescuing, moving whole towns, and opening their homes in order to help one another. FEMA stepped in at the end.

And, no, I never hear of any rioting or looting and I hear very little complaining about any of it.

There's no outrage because a vast majority of the people in the midwest have taken responsibility upon themselves. They know that nobody can control the rain. They take what measures they can to prevent flooding based on what money's available. Sometimes it's not enough. Does anything get done when you sit on your a$$ complaining, waiting for someone else to take care of your problems. Most Midwesterners know that this absolutely NEVER works. Personal accountability is a midwestern value.

In other parts of the country though, people have more of a victim mentality that's been instilled into them...it's always someone else's fault...i.e. it's the government's fault this natural disaster happened and I'm going to sit here until they fix everything. And while the government and volunteers who take off work and come in from other parts of the country flow in to help, I think I'll keep complaining. Hell, maybe I'll even do some looting. That'll make me feel better about the government screwing me over like they just did by allowing this natural disaster to happen.

I just about $hit when I heard the hail dinging off the house and the cars. I've lived in KC all 31 years of my life and that was by far the worst hail I'd ever seen/heard.

The difference between the New Orleans disaster and the Midwest is that the majority of the damage from Hurricane Katrina took place within a matter of hours, as opposed to a period of days/weeks of rainfall in the Midwest. Lot more time to put together evacuation plans and start sandbagging...

I know its popular to stereotype and generalise about "victim" mentalities, but there were significant failings in the local and federal governments response to the disaster. This has been pretty well established by numerous investigations. I don't think its entirely fair to blame the victims of the disaster for the subsequent chaos when the problem was caused by a fundamental breakdown in disaster management.

Midwesterners know how to take car of themselves. They aren't welfare leaches looting a flat screen.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Ah yes, take responsibility for yourselves you lily livered (that's probably not pc) 'victims' of natural disasters. That earth quake really wasn't so bad, that tsunami was just a little wave, that hurricane was just a little storm. I blame those whingers from the third world. They never do anything for themselves, always have their caps in hand looking for a handout. Honestly we should just nuke anyone who doesn't sing yankee doodle dandee when they get hit by a freak of nature!

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

There are "welfare leaches" in the Midwest.

There must be some reason the coastal states pay more in taxes than they get back and the 'hard working' midwestern states take more than they pay ;)

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip
