There is just too many issues that differ in the Iowa/Missouri situation to New Orleans.

***as a disclaimer, I am from the midwest and originally not far from the affected areas. I remember the floods of 93' and they came dangereously close to where I lived at the time.***

1) We can argue that the midwest is somewhat more affluent than New Orleans. Yes, we aren't talking about upper middle class but generally the people of these areas aren't the poorest of the poor...for the most part they have cars they can drive away to evacuate.

2) Most people had someplace to go waiting out the flood, unlike many in NO who got stuck at the Superbowl or Convention Center with little food, water or clothing for several days.

3) So far, it seems that FEMA might be handling this better. It hasn't been a widespread clusterf*ck that seemed to have happened down south.

4) As much as I love where I'm from, we're not exactly known for our unique culture and history. New Orleans has a very rich history of music and French colonialism, and if you have ever been there you would understand just how unique and important this place is historically. Watching the aftermath of Katrina broke my heart not only because of the human tragedy but because of the rich culture that was literally being washed away.

5) In all, Katrina affected a larger population base than the midwest floods.

I'm not trying to minimize what happened in the midwest because I very much know how terrible the suffering is on a personal level. I think it would be great if the midwest floods got more attention from the movie stars and musicians. But should you truly feel outraged about this? Unless the midwest people are getting denied aid expressly because it is the midwest, I feel we don't have a good reason to feel anger.

Great post. As long as people are getting help and aid (and they are - the national guard were out the other week doing the lion's share of the sandbag work) publicity is about as useful as a fart in a hurricane. I would also hazard a guess that the reason New Orleans got so much attention was also because there was a much higher body count than in the Midwest. Death sells...

I think it is b/c they airlifted Geraldo to the convention center. I remember him actually saying "Oh the humanity." Situation wasn't funny, but Geraldo's dramatics are.

Yeah the media certainly fed a lot of the hysteria - which makes me think that trying to find a way to pin the blame on the residents on New Orleans who were stranded (for whatever reason) is more than a little unfair.

that's pretty much what I touched on the other day as well as one piece of the whole picture - it's completely ridiculous to base OUTRAGEEEEE!!! on the black & white issue.

Great post ginger1981 :)

Great post ginger1981 :)

Perhaps instead of "Where is the Outrage", the thread title should be "Where is the rationality"

Or maybe people who didn't live through Katrina and have absolutely no clue what life was like in the Gulf Coast before, during, or after the storm shouldn't be allowed to pass judgment and call it a race thing.

Wait...I'm adopting Amber's attitude....I don't care...I don't care...my shoes are pretty.

That's what I thought too - its easy to tell others what to do when you're not in the other person's shoes. All you can do is make an abstract judgement on what you would hypothetically do - ignoring the fact that you don't share the other persons circumstances.

No. We don't count. We're just "fly-over" states and produce nothing for the country as a whole.*

*Except corn, soybeans, wheat, many other vegetables, Toyota vehicles, Hondas, Subarus, car parts, computers, drugs (Eli Lilly & Pfizer), etc etc...

Bunch of worthless f*cking leeches we are.

Could be a lot worse though...NYC could be dumping all its trash in one of our states.

Hi All ...

I live in Scotland but was in Iowa until the 15th of June visiting my fiance and had some experience of the flooding. Contrary to one of the posts I've read, Iowa is a very beautiful part of the USA .. sure it has a lot of corn fields and flat lands, but there are a lot of interesting things there too! The people are so very welcoming and friendly, which makes a big difference when you're trying to find your feet in a new place. I guess I don't like people saying bad things about Iowa because it's going to be my home soon!! :)

You know, all I really saw during the flood was a community working hard together, sandbagging, helping neighbours out etc. Anything that anyone could do to help was quickly done. The emergency services did some awesome work too.

I know it will take a while for the city to get back to normal - they have lost their library and many buildings are going to need a lot of work done to them to bring them back to their "pre-flood" state. There are also many businesses that will not be re-opening because of the flood damage. I wish them all well .. and will be thinking of them ....

I go back to Iowa on the 29th of July and am looking forward to going "home" ...

Hope you all have a peaceful weekend ...

There are some here who think the coasts are the only worthwhile places in America. As such, some of us who live in the midwest like to bait them whenever we can.

Living in a small town, having quiet at night, knowing who your neighbor is and helping out when needed, having affordable housing, not having to pay to park your car..... these are all considered undesirable things by some of the city-dwellers here.
