I-90 Info thread for Greencard errors

Got my green card in the mail today, and my middle name's spelled wrong (they've added an extra letter) in the info at the bottom of the card. So I guess I'll be sending it straight back again and joining this thread, even though it seems like it's not very active (hopefully that's a good sign and means that everyone's got their new and improved green cards!)... sigh.

Just gnashing my teeth over the stupid I-90 form now. Even trying to work out where to send it is confusing the hell out of me - misinfo line says NBC, but I'm inclined to think CSC... either way, looks like it's going to be a long old wait for a replacement card. Why can't they deal with things quickly when it's THEIR error which needs fixing? Oh, wait... this is USCIS, that's why, I forgot!:blush:

So... after receiving my green card on Monday and discovering my middle name was spelled wrong on it, I sent it back to CSC on Tuesday along with an I-90. Sigh. Before I did that, I went to an Infopass to see if I could get an I-551 stamp in my passport, as I was loath to just send my new green card back into the void without much in the way of proof that I ever had it - I know some people on this thread have said they needed an NOA from the I-90 to get the stamp, but I thought I'd chance it anyway. And I'm glad I did, because the woman I spoke to at the Infopass told me I WON'T get a receipt - whether this is right or not, I have no idea (it certainly looks like some people get them), but she told me that because there's no payment in this kind of situation, no receipt number is generated, so they don't send an NOA... and she also said that makes it nightmarish for them to try to track how things are going if I go in to ask for an update at any point. Great! But anyway, she gave me the stamp without any problems, although I did have to ask - she didn't volunteer to give me it, it was more like 'oh, I suppose I could do that if you want' - um, yes please!

Anyway, I thought I would try my hand at updating the list - I hope nobody minds but I've attempted to clean it up a bit (sorry it's a bit wobbly!) - I did a search on some of the usernames of people whose info hadn't been updated, and managed to find out when a few of them got their corrected green cards... but a few others, who seemed to post once or twice then never again, and never reported back on getting their cards, I've removed from the list. I hope that's ok, it makes it look more encouraging, anyway - rather than appearing that nobody ever received their new card! I think there are a handful of us who have filed (or who are about to file) an I-90, so maybe we can resurrect this thread and compare notes while we wait!

(Grr.... the list looked ok earlier, now it's all messed up... edited a bit, but must work out how to straighten it out!)

My wife also got her card with and error on it. On the very bottom line of the green card they added an extra letter after her middle initial. I do believe that all they print is the middle initial on the card. Anyway, Im not really sure what is good evidence to send with the I-90... Does anybody know? All I did was send copies of previous USCIS documents and notices that had her correct name. Also, on the I-90's it mentions "when you appear in person".. I hope this dont mean we have to travel to the field office for some reason! Its their error. Hope somebody has some experience with this...

Thanks, FeatherB, for updating this list. I have noticed several people posting about green card errors lately. I also heard that green card errors by USCIS will not receive a NOA for the I-90. We have yet to receive Hachemi's corrected green card and I am not sure that we can even check on the progress. At least he has a I-551 stamp in his passport that expires in Jan. 2008.

Songsparrow, I sent a copy of Hachemi's passport, visa, and birth certificate. Also a copy of the original I-485, to show it was there mistake.

wjinsf, I would make another Infopass and inform them you will not receive a NOA. If she says otherwise, I would ask to speak to someone else.

I was confused by all that stuff about 'when you appear in person' (along with the bits where it says to fill in 'another' I-90 - no idea what they're going on about there...) too, but from reading this thread it doesn't sound like that part applies when you're trying to get a replacement green card because of a USCIS error. I don't know in what circumstances it would apply, but I haven't seen anyone mention anything like that on this thread.

I think if the problem is the middle name, or that they've added an extra initial for some reason, the only thing you can do is send whatever evidence you have (copies rather than originals, of course) showing her full name including the correct middle name, and that there is clearly no 'second' middle name, and send a cover letter with it explaining exactly what's wrong with the card and listing all the evidence you've included. What I sent was copies of my birth certificate, passport photo page, K-1 visa and marriage certificate, along with a photocopy of the first page of my I-485, showing that I hadn't misspelled my name on there (in case they try to say it's my error, not theirs). I wrote a cover letter, too, and highlighted the correct spelling of my middle name on every one of the items I included, just to be super-obvious! But anyway, as it sounds like you've already sent it, it shouldn't actually be difficult for them to find out that it was their error, surely... if they have access to your AOS file, they'll be able to see the evidence you originally included, and the forms you originally filed with the correct name. When I went to my Infopass, the woman I saw called up something on her computer and said my middle name was spelled correctly 'in the system' and so she could instantly see that it was a USCIS error in producing the card... hopefully it'll be just as easy for them to spot that the mistake is theirs in your case, too! :)

Aha, that's something I meant to say in my post before... I was told at my Infopass that because I won't get an NOA, it'll make it a bit of a nightmare to check on the case's progress, BUT the woman I spoke to did say that even though I won't be able to track it, and they won't be able to check on it if I go for another Infopass, they can still put in a request for an update on the case status - sounds like they'd get in touch with CSC and ask them to give me an update. She said that they (CSC) can check it on their 'local' system - am guessing it'll be the same for the NBC, too. So I think what I'll do when I've inevitably heard absolutely nothing a couple of months from now, is make an Infopass and ask them if they can put in a request for me - at least then if I get a letter in the mail eventually confirming that they actually have received the I-90, that will be something!

Also, on the occasions I spoke to the Misinfo line about this last week, I was told each time that I *would* get an NOA & receipt number. I'm sure they're talking total rubbish as usual, but at least if all those customer service people believe NOAs do get sent out for I-90s, hopefully that means that a phonecall after a suitable amount of time to say we're 'worried' about not receiving one might get us put through to an immigration officer... who we can then ask to put in a request for some kind of update! Like I said, just knowing that they haven't 'accidentally' shredded the envelope would be a start....!

Let's keep this thread going and update it with whatever info we might be able to find out (and even better, update it with the happy news of actually receiving new cards!)... hope everyone who's been waiting a while gets some good news very soon!

So - for the record, I made an Infopass before sending in my incorrect card and I-90, and asked for an I-551 stamp in my passport. The agent asked me whether I was traveling in the next 2 weeks. I said no. He then said that they no longer gave out I-551 stamps unless applicants were traveling in the very near future.

He then instructed me to fill out the I-90, and send in my incorrect green card. "In about 2 weeks" he also informed me, I'd probably get a NOA. I could then bring that NOA in to get a stamp if I planned to travel.

I sent in my card to Lee's Summit, MO (NBC) on July 17th via certified mail, return receipt. USPS showed it was received on 19th July.

Until today, I had not received any NOA or any word of the status of my case.

Tonight, I received this email from CRIS:

*** DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS E-MAIL ***

The last processing action taken on your case

Receipt Number: MSC##########

Application Type: I485 , APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS

Current Status: Notice mailed welcoming the new permanent resident.

On August 21, 2007, we mailed you a notice that we had registered this customer's new permanent resident status. Please follow any instructions on the notice. Your new permanent resident card should be mailed within 60 days following this registration or after you complete any ADIT processing referred to in the welcome notice, whichever is later. If you move before you get your new card call customer service. You can also receive automatic e-mail updates as we process your case. Just follow the link below to register.

If you have questions or concerns about your application or the case status results listed above, or if you have not received a decision from USCIS within the current processing time listed*, please contact USCIS Customer Service at (800) 375-5283.

*Current processing times can be found on the USCIS website at www.uscis.gov under Case Status and Processing Dates.

I sure hope this means I'm getting a corrected card soon.

Sounds like you should be getting your corrected Green card soon. Congratulations! Lets hope and pray it is right this time.

I sent Hachemi's I-90 a month before you did. I wish USCIS would get off their tails and send my husband's card.

I was out of town from Friday-Saturday this past weekend, and when I returned today, Sunday, 8/26, I found 2 pieces of mail from the National Benefits Center:

1) dated 8/21, postmarked 8/22 - simple letter acknowledging that my initial green card was issued with incorrect info. due to a USCIS administrative error. Corrected card should be received in 2-3 weeks.

2) dated 8/21, postmarked 8/23 - NOA for I-485 - Welcome Notice for new permanent residents (this is the same letter I received when I was first approved, back in June '07).

Just wanted to update the thread so y'all know what to watch for. Good luck to everyone on their I-90s...

Greetings all,

I have an issue explained here and was directed to this post which has been very helpful. I asked a question there which I will repeat here in case anyone checking this section can answer this for me:

Is there a time frame within which the green card has to be returned?

I've already had it for more than 2 weeks, will that be an issue if I try to return it now?

If I do send it in, what is the process for getting the I-551 stamp in my passport? I now have a job as a government employee and can be asked to prove my status at any time and also need to travel so I am not comfortable sending back the green card without being able to get the I-551 stamp in my passport to both show proof of status and allow me to travel. There doesnt seem to be any standard with Infopass is there any way for me to ensure that I do get a stamp?

Hello! :)

Nope, I don't think there's a time frame that you need to return the green card in - don't worry about that... I think if I remember right from reading this thread, there were a few people who only noticed an error on their card months after they got it, and they had no problems beyond the interminable wait for the new one to arrive.

As for getting the I-551 stamp... well, if I were you I'd definitely try to get it BEFORE you send the card back if at all possible. I know some people haven't been able to get the stamp and have been told they'll need to show an NOA, but I made an Infopass the day after my green card arrived and was able to get the stamp without any problems (I did have to ask for it, the woman didn't volunteer it, and when I asked, her reaction was along the lines of 'oh... I suppose you could have the stamp, if you want it' - uh, yeah, how else am I supposed to prove I'm a permanent resident...?!), so you might be able to get it easily too. My real reason in going to the Infopass was to get the stamp, but instead of just walking in there and asking for it I explained about the error and asked for advice on what to do, etc... and as the lady I spoke to TOLD me I won't get an NOA for the I-90, she could hardly insist that I wait until I get one before I get the stamp. So hopefully whoever you speak to will be aware that they apparently aren't sending out NOAs (although it seems from this thread that a lot of people did get them eventually) and won't give you any grief about giving you the stamp. I don't see why they should - you are a permanent resident and you need to be able to prove it! If you say you'll need to travel overseas at short notice for your job, or something, surely any reasonable person would agree to give you the stamp!

Sorry to be so longwinded! Hope you can get the stamp as easily as I did (seriously, if you do get any hassle at one office, maybe there's another you could try...? I don't think I'd have let my green card out of my sight without that stamp in my passport!), and don't worry about the gap between receiving the card and sending it back, I'm sure that makes no difference to anything at all. I hope you don't have too much of a wait... where are you sending the I-90? The instructions on where to send it if there's an error on your green card are pretty confusing... from your timeline I'm guessing your I-485 was transferred to CSC? If so, that's apparently where you need to send it back to... to this address:

USCIS California Service Center

Attn: I-90 "b" or "d"

PO Box 10090

Laguna Niguel

CA 92607-1009

I also noticed from your timeline that your approval date is the same as mine - I guess CSC weren't doing too well with middle names that day. Anyway, good luck! And keep us updated on how it goes...

Great, so I do not need to worry about that part

As for getting the I-551 stamp... well, if I were you I'd definitely try to get it BEFORE you send the card back if at all possible.

Exactly, I might try another infopass appointment and if I am able to get the stamp take it from there. Fact is, if I cannot get the stamp then I am going to go with what I was told at the first infopass appointment and not send in the green card unless I have a problem. I plan to travel during Christmas with my husband and I figure if they have an issue when we are coming back then with him there with me, it will be less stressful if they have an issue with the card.

Sorry to be so longwinded!

I appreciate your response, it's wasnt long winded, it was informative, thanks!

I'm guessing your I-485 was transferred to CSC? If so, that's apparently where you need to send it back to... to this address:

USCIS California Service Center

Attn: I-90 "b" or "d"

PO Box 10090

Laguna Niguel

CA 92607-1009

Yes it was transfered to CSC and thats another thing, based on what I read this address you gave is where I would file to but when I called the information line, the rude man told me that because my case number starts with MSC I have to send it to Nebraska ... why are they do confusing!

I also noticed from your timeline that your approval date is the same as mine - I guess CSC weren't doing too well with middle names that day. Anyway, good luck! And keep us updated on how it goes...

You are right ... I do not know what was going on with them at that time or any other time for that matter!

Does your middle name have the characters FALVIA on it? That is the supposed code that is in mine and I dont know why! ... Man this is frustrating but I'm keeping the faith that I will get through it all without going crazy!!!

Thanks again.

Blessed

Hi all,

It's good to see some people also have errors on their cards and that I am not the only cursed one here!! I feel your frustration with USCIS!!

How long is the current process for issuing new cards? A few months ago it seemed to take 3 months.

I have not sent my card back yet even though I have had it since July and want to fly overseas early Jan 2008. I do have a temp stamp in my passport as I entered as a perm resident. However, I would feel more comfortable having the actually card back by then.

thanks.

11-05-06 Sent I-130 to California

06-01-07 INTERVIEW

06-04-07 Received VISA in the mail. Silly Consulate issued me CR-1 instead of IR-1, no time to change it in Australia, will try to change it once in California.

06-10-07 POE SFO

06-21-07 Receive SSN#

07-12-07 Receive Green Card in the mail STILL HAD CR1 INSTEAD OF IR1

12-10-07 Finally sent I-90 asking for a new green card with correct info.

06-17-08 INFOPASS - Was told USCIS sent new green card to old address back in Jan. Will resend it but may not be able to correct error as it was made by Consulate not USCIS.

What to do now??
