I hate weeds. I have a hill for a backyard and on that hill are tons of rocks and weeds. These weeds have superpowers in that their roots are as thick as trees and no kidding it takes me at least 10 minutes to get EACH weed uprooted and that is with a lot of elbow grease.

Any tricks to doing this more easily? I've sprayed the whole area with round-up one year and that did nothing. They're pretty tall too...approx 1 foot each. Should I just cut them and THEN spray them?

Seems like you are doing all that can be done, bar attacking it with a flame thrower! Seriously, if weeds are pernicious you need to remove them at the roots and mostly to get them out by the roots requires elbow grease - and on a hill too so rotovating isn't going to work!

I feel for you. What are you going to do with your hill if/when you get rid of these weeds?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Well when I sit on my side porch I have two views, one of my next door neighbor's garden, also on a hill, full of mulch and very prety flowery plants. The other is of my hill full of weeds. I feel guilty enjoying the view of his garden when mine looks like crapola so I just want to get rid of the weeds, put down some mulch and plant some pretty flowery plants :)

increase the mix of the roundup (more roundup). weedeat the weeds first before spraying. make sure you apply it when it's not going to rain for several days.

could, but i doubt it will be as effective as weedeating. green weeds don't tend to burn anyways. (unless you got lotsa gas..)

YEA WACKY WEED WOULD BE BETTER, but since its "weeds" I would go to the corner where the day labor hangs out, grab a couple laborers and show them what you want done. make sure u have your weed wacker ready, gas on hand, extra line for it. gloves for the ones with thorns, mulch previosly delivered. and what ever else you think u will need. find out what pay is expected and buy them a simple lunch ( or make it ). don't get young ones coz they still aren't seasoned workers, look at the cloths and boots and u will get a really good idea who will get the job done. (well worn work cloths , meens they work!!) then sit back and supervise with an ice cold drink of your choice and start planning the next stage.....the plantings.. I know it sounds very tiring, but u will get through it..good luck

We have the same problem. My husband applies round up several times a year to keep on top of the weeds and we use a weed eater. We have been working on our back hill for 4 years now, gradually terracing parts of it and reclaiming weeded areas from the hill. One area is just too steep and sunny to be more than a desert style rock garden - although it doesn't stop the weeds! Butterfly bushes are helping and the terracing with drainage tile underneath has virtually stopped the erosion we faced before hand. Our first year was just a battle against kudzu and poison ivy. We have now succeeded in reaching the edge of the property and are putting landscaping timbers in to demarcate the area. We still have to weed-eat regularly and use round up at least twice a year. More and more of the yard, hill and gardens have reached the stage though where I can more or less keep on top of the weeding by hand.

Good luck with your hill - weeding is a never ending job. When you actually kill off the weeds with round up, put down black landscaping cloth over top of the hill and then cover it with mulch. It will help to keep the weeds down and you can cut through the landscape cloth to plant your flowers.
