Ok, I have been observing a lot of these discussions. I am posting this as i think it gives a "both sides to the story"

I just read this on MSN.com and I think it's a great article. You know I'm all for human rights before anything, so it's good to see what the consequences are, good or bad, written on paper.

the only thing i don't understand is why they wrote "garbage collection" would suffer...

anywhere i've lived in the US (in Jersey and NYC), garbage collection is always a city job, and a pretty-good paying one at that... ? is it different in other states?

I live in Jersey but in a townhome complex, our garbage guys are pvt... all Hispanic looking, I assume some of them may be undocumented. I know none of the ones I've ran into speak any English.. literally none at all.

Hmmm... I don't think it can be denied that there is a criminal element among the illegal immigrant population. As to what extent crimes committed by illegal immigrant affect the national crime rate - I suppose that's an open question...

not where I live, maybe NYC or LA but the rest of the country isn't that way. Most illegals stay home with their families and only go out to work or get groceries. They want to attract as little attention as possible waiting to see what the government is going to do after the election.

Just like there is a criminal element among the rest of the US (native-born or legalized).

Though in this piece it states:

"Critics of lax immigration policies say that drug running, traffic accidents and crime would go down with the illegal immigrants gone. But The Immigration Policy Center, a Washington research group, argues that studies show that immigrants in general are less likely to commit crimes or to end up behind bars than native-born Americans. The debate goes on."

I don't think the national crime rate is much affected. The illegal immigrant's undocummented status itself may even prove to be a crime deterrent....don't commit a crime that may draw the 'law's' attention?
