I brought my mother-in-law here on a B1/B2 visa last December. We applied back in May for an extension and sent the original I-94 in per the form instructions. Now my father-in-law is ill and there's a chance my wife and mother-in-law may need to go home to be with him.

Since my mother-in-law does not have her I-94, how can she legally leave the country? She has her receipt notice for the extension. Would she turn that in instead of the I-94?

You do not need anything to leave the US, getting back in is another issue.

What reason did she have to extend her visit?

She extended because ehw wanted to spend more time with her new grandson. She has a ten year multiple entry visa and I don't want her to have any future problems coming back if she needed to leave now.

She extended because ehw wanted to spend more time with her new grandson. She has a ten year multiple entry visa and I don't want her to have any future problems coming back if she needed to leave now.

First issue is whether you will get an extention, if not the B is gone and you woud need to apply for another.

Usually you need a valid reason, so you would need to be lucky.

You do not need the I-94 to leave in good standing.
