From Citizenship & Immigration Canada. Scroll down the page past the alphabetical country listing to.......

Many people do not require a visa to visit Canada. These include:

  • persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence

If you are going by land (driving) you don't need a passport yet. You just have to prove status, so your wife a greencard and if your were born in the U.S., your birth certificate, or passport. You just need to prove citizenship or permanent resident status, but you don't have to use your passport.
