There was some loophole in english law a few years ago that meant you could sell them legally. Sadly, that loophole is now closed.

Did they change that part of the law too? They used to sell them openly in Camden Market and (of all places) Tottenham Court Road.

I thought for "personal use" you are still allowed to pick them in the wild and eat them - but any sort of preparation (drying them for tea, for example) was illegal.

They closed the one for selling - there was a boom of mushroom selling the year I left (2005), all perfectly legal. The ones they sold were the far more potent varieties not native to Britain.

I believe you can still pick them for personal use, I imagine that would be impossible to police anyway.

You wouldn't need to police it - as the picking of wild mushrooms is generally pretty dodgy anyway - unless you know exactly what you're looking for. You take your life in your hands all the same...

Well, it certainly doesn't stop a lot of people. The magic kind of mushrooms are readily available in Richmond park, if you know what to look for

... if you know what to look for... A lot of people don't and end up eating poisonous toadstools by mistake.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

i'm failing to see how guns even figure into this discussion.

i don't know about you, but if someone was intentionally cultivating these, i'd be worried.

You're advocating outlawing something because of its potential harm to others, correct?

i'm failing to see why anyone would want to grow a poisonous plant in quantity.

spare me the firearm diatribe.

Who knows? Who cares? I fail to see why the government should tell me what I can or cannot grow.

If there was a safety concern, then require the grower to grow them in a green house or some secure structure out of reach of people and animals. But in any case, it should be under civil law juridiction, not criminal, IMO.

Hmmm. Plenty of widely grown, commercially available house plants are highly poisonous if consumed. Is there a distinction for mild hallucinatory effects?

I could be wrong here - but magic mushrooms don't have contain close to the level of psychoactive chemicals that you'd find in peyote or LSD.

don't bet on that. i'm certain anyone growing a decent quantity of them will get fed law enforcement attention. just like growing anthrax.......

I suppose we could make a criminal case out just about any type of weapons stockpiling...but simply outlawing it outright makes absolutely no sense. As Number 6 points out, there are plenty poisonous and toxic plants, not to mention all kinds of toxic chemical you and I can go and buy at the store. Timothy McVeigh used bags of ordinary fertilizer. The point is, you can't outright ban something like ordinary fertilizer just because of the potential danger it possesses. There are sensible ways to apply laws without criminalizing the otherwise law abiding citizens for growing whatever natural plants they want to.

fertilizer isn't banned. but it's purchase sure is tracked - go buy several thousand pounds :jest:

while i don't give a hoot if someone has these mushrooms growing on their property, i'd be quite worried if they were intentionally cultivating thousands of them. what, pray tell, could be the purpose of it?

That sensible. I just don't see the logic in throwing people behind bars for the type of plants they grow, which is really different from your argument (volume). And in the case with marijuana and the shrooms used as an hallucinogen - if people want to grow it, let them. If you want to put limits or restrictions on just how much, fine - just don't throw otherwise harmless citizens behind bars for growing plants. :)

hippy-flipping anyone?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I flip hippies in my spare time.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
