“We are taking these actions in recognition of Libya's continued commitment to its renunciation of terrorism and the excellent cooperation Libya has provided to the United States and other members of the international community in response to common global threats faced by the civilized world since September 11, 2001,” Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice said in a statement.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

LOL it's so easy for the State Department to switch directions.

The more difficult part is the re-programming of the American people, so they will also switch directions and starting considering this long-reviled enemy as a cooperating "ally," instead of as THE GREAT SATAN he's been painted to be for decades.

But I am sure the spin-doctors are already hard at work on the plan.

The confusion stems from the fact that there is no standardized system for transliterating the Arabic language into "Roman" letters. You see it with transliterations of Chinese as well.... spellings in "our" letters are all over the place.... depending on who is writing, the same words can look entirely different.

For instance, some transliterations are done by the French. They use the same alphabet as English, but have entirely different pronunciation rules. Thus you get words like "Lebanon." When pronounced by Arab speakers, the word sounds like "Libnan" or "Lubnan." To the French, that would be spelled "Lebanon" in Roman letters. Then English speakers see the spelling and sound it out according to English rules, saying "Lebb-a-non."

It had my head spinning when I started to learn Arabic.... A standardized system is long past due.

...instead of as THE GREAT SATAN he's been painted to be for decades.

You meant to say the Great Satan he's been and will continue to be. Or is there a "softer" side to the guy that I have missed somehow? Well, there must be since his people have had him lead their country for the past, what, going on 40 years. As history shows, only the good ones stick around that long.

He may not be the most enlightened dictator of the modern age, but I don't think he even comes close to being a Great Satan. There are plenty of other world leaders who are/were much worse in terms of causing human suffering (not to name names *cough cough*)

And now you can openly say that once again, even on the phone, without triggering a recorder somewhere. Damn, almost forgot, we don't need triggers for that anymore. It's all on tape nowadays... :P

No doubt there are equally bad or worse tyrants out there. To say that he's just not the most enlightened is a bit easy, though. I bet the scores of Libyan refugees would see that a bit more seriously. To me, the 1986 bombing of the "LaBelle" hit pretty close to home. He's had his hands in that one...

I never said he was a great guy, or someone to admire. (The "just" you inserted into your synopsis rather changes the nuance of my statement.)

I am saying that (IMHO) he is not The Great Satan, the Ultra-Boogey-Man, Public Enemy #1, etc. that he was painted to be. There are many who are far worse who would deserve the title much more..... Libya's Crazy Man is not even in the Top 10.

Neither does HAMAS make the Top 10. But thanks for playing and please come again !
