Did you or will you change your name after marriage?

I changed mine because I wanted to and I was tired of my old name that I had been using for 30 years...

I do have a few people who mispronounce my name (I did before I knew how it was supposed to sound )but most people around here know how to pronounce it...

Yes, I changed my name. I wanted my husband's name. Not everyone wants to change their name...that's their right. Name change is a personal decision.

I am just about to go through the whole SSN and AOS thing and I'm not 100% sure how I do this.. where do I change my name.. can I do it at the same time as I file for all of this? And if so is it just to put his name as lastname and attach a copy of the marrage license?

Change your name with Social Security then it's easier to change other documents. Because of this, many women decide to get their SSN AFTER marriage, otherwise you'll have to get it in your maiden name, then change it again once you get married. Just show your marriage certificate.

When you apply for AOS use your married name - that's what will appear on your GC. You can then change your passport, credit cards, bank accounts, etc etc.

My argentine passport is still on my maiden name (you can't drop your maiden name in Argentina), and because passport-airplane ticket-miles member have to coincide...it is still the only time I use my maiden name

I've thought about this a lot.

First thing:

Him being from Latin America, the "thing" to do would be to add his last name to mine (which my soon to be sister-in-law did), but my last name is German and his Latin. Hum...kinda funny sounding.

Second thing:

I have a 5 yr/o daughter that has my last name and I recieve child support for. We decided that he would wait for a while to adopt her until we no longer needed the support money to support her. So, she would have to keep my name, and I'm not sure how I feel about having a different last name than my daughter.

Third thing:

Me and my father have had a falling out of sorts lately, that began years ago, and I don't really want to have his last name anymore.

I guess I have time to figure it out though since our K-1 process has just started...

Changing it.

I want me, my husband and our future children to share the same last name. I like my last name, but his is fine too, and luckily it's not one of the hard to pronounce Turkish surnames!

I changed my name as well. I also wanted there to be no confusion for future children. I know that DH saw it as a sign of respect to him personally and that it meant a lot to him.

To each their own is my opinon. If you want to, go right ahead...if you don't, don't. Your choice in the end.

I changed my last name. My husband tells me that in Morocco, women do not generally take on their husband's last name. That is why i always get mail from his brother in my old name. LOLOL

The topic of the name change has recently become a HUGE deal amongst my friends. I am keeping my name. It's a decision that I made a long time ago. After I became engaged I discussed it with my fiance. I thought I'd make a compromise with both of us taking my last name as our middle name and his last name as both our last names = MyFirstName MyLastName HisLast Name for me and HisFirstName MyLastName HisLastName. He said he wasn't going to do that because it wasn't traditonal (rolling my eyes). So we decided to keep our names as they are.

I have a guy friend that says he wouldn't marry a woman if she wasn't going to change her name (huh?). It actually started to upset me and really offend me that a man wouldn't take the wife's last name as part of his own. I could go on and on about this (strong sense of identity, I've had this name my whole life etc etc) but I just decided that it's too much trouble for me to change my name with all my legal and financial documents especially when I've always wanted to keep my name.

So in conclusion -- I'm keeping my birth name and our kids, if we have them, will have both our last names.

Laura Baker REALLY sounds good. Just an opinion

Oh, and I talked about taking my husband's last name long before the wedding. My last name was hard for people to pronounce even in my country, and whenever I travelled abroad it was frustrating. I am a bit sad to lose it because I only have one sister and no brothers, but I know it will be much easier this way.

We didn't change names - various reasons including the complexity of having to do so across two countries.. especially if/when we move back to Germany..
