If I'm reading things right........Ramadan is approx 8 weeks away. Just thought I'd put that here so that if any of you are like me, queen of procrastination, then it's time to start making up any missed fasts. I think I'll do one day a week starting this week.

Also, just curious, is anyone here currently saving to go to Hajj? I had this discussion with my husband about how we've started a savings account for a trip to Egypt inshallah next April but I said to him that I would feel guilty saving for any trips whether they be to see family or to just site see, if we don't at least attempt to save for Hajj.

Just wondering if anyone else is doing something similar. Be kinda cool if there was like a Hajj cd or something that banks offered.

Hajj cd...lol. I can see the blank expression at the bank now.

Also, if anyone's gone to Hajj before did you go with your mosque or did you use an outside travel service?

Since you can't go to hajj with any existing debt....I doubt I'm ever gonna make it. The car wont be paid off for 4 more years.

jJ

No plans for hajj, but I would love to fly out for eid.

Where does it say you can't go with any existing debt? I've never heard of that one before. If that's the case how does anyone in the US go since just about everyone has a mortgage?

There are specific travel agencies that handle Hajj tour groups. Saudi does not allow individuals to come. They must go in approved groups. Each country has a limit on how many people can come to Saudi each year for Hajj. This means you have to make your reservations really early with the appropriate travel agency.

Debt free won't be us anytimes soon either. My husbands aunt and uncle went 2 years ago. I don't think they went with their mosque but I will find out. This will be the first Ramadan and Eid our daughter will somewhat understand. Exciting.

Yeah, my mosque has something every night - I was there almost everynight last year, but that's when I was alone and wasn't a student. It's also really far away.

This year, if I don't have class I plan on going to the mosque. The regulars have become good friends and it was nice to have people to break the fast with and pray. I might also reserve one night a week for me and the hubby to break fast together :luv:

Ok I just read a few q & a items on sunnipath and from what I gather you *can* do Hajj if you have debt but only if you are not in arrears. If you are in arrears (behind on your payments) then you would need permission from whatever creditors you are in arrears from. Otherwise, although it's not an obligation to do Hajj while you still have debt, you can still do it and it will count.

http://qa.sunnipath.com/issue_view.asp?HD=...4225&CATE=7

Question:

Is your Hajj valid if you have an interest-free loan that you are paying in installments or a house for that matter? Also can you borrow money to make Hajj?

Answer:

Wa Alaykum Assalam wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu,

From a previous question answered by Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari :

If you really want to go for Hajj at present, then you may take a loan from someone, perform Hajj with that money and then pay off the loan with Halal and lawful money.

As far as the second aspect is concerned, which is going for Hajj despite on debt, if it is an interest-based loan, then it would be wise to pay off the loan first and then go for Hajj. However, this will not have an effect on your Hajj as long as the money used for performing Hajj is Halal.

If the loan is not interest-based, then if you fulfil your monthly commitments and your creditors do not have any arrears claim against you, it is perfectly permissible to perform Hajj. However, if the creditors have arrears claims against you, then you will be infringing on their rights by performing Hajj. Hence, you should not perform Hajj without the consent of the creditors claiming arrears from you.

It should be also remembered that, if a person is heavily indebted and his liabilities exceed his assets, Hajj is not obligatory (fard) upon him/her. (See: Radd al-Muhtar)

Wassalam,

SunniPath Fiqh Team

Question:

I read "Performing Hajj with a debt". In it you are talking about a debt which doesn''''t involve riba. My question is if somebody has a mortgage involving riba then should he be thinking of performing hajj or should he be thinking of getting himself out of riba first? Which is important?

Answer:

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

It is more incumbent to repay such debts than to perform Hajj, because of the well-established fiqh principle derived from the Qur'an and Sunna that, "Avoiding harm is given precedence to attaining unto benefits." [ibn Nujaym]

And Allah alone gives success.

That's awesome Amal!!!! Does that mean your mortgage will be paid off or will you be renting?

I have no idea what my financial status will be by the time we save up enough $$$. I have seen prices as cheap as $3,500 PP just from searching the net but I have certain stipulations:

1) I'm not sharing a room with strangers (some packages are cheap because you have to fill a quad room and if there are only two of you then that means you're sharing with two strangers.)

2) I want to be in one of the newer and all too important air-conditioned tents in Medina.

Other than that I'm cool with whatever, you know? I mean I don't need first class air or anything like that but the bus ride from the airport better not be one of those non airconditioned crammed up busses that you see people hanging on to the sides of while they're driving.
