:D.... ....Sorry, Omoba

You ladies really have me cracking up Laughing Out Loud sometimes. You should all get together and take this show on the road. The VJ Comedy Club. :dancing::lol:

Life is too stressful to be serious all the time. I am truly a closet nutcase  I usually have my head in the gutter :innocent::rofl:

*ahem* actually, this was the accused post that took us off topic. Notice how it says "ASANTE MAROON" in the quote.

In the words of my grandmother "You will send me to jail" and watch from the side lines :pop:

:ot2: You could use a dose of Mefloquine!!! :star:

Ahem....

I would like to say that I agree that malaria is a very serious condition in many areas in sub-saharan africa and that it is our personal responsibility to insure that we contain this epidemic and do not transpose the possibilities of infection to our compatriots within american borders. I support the use of mood enhancing malaria preventive medications for all citizens travelling within these regions on a weekly basis unless they are not travelling within these regions wherein they should probably be redirected to our intervention scheduled at Asante's place in NYC. Everyone should bring a dish as paper products will abound.

Thank you for your support. Did I get it back on track Omoba? ;)

AHAHAHAHA, I was fooled until I saw the last sentence.

I think you just made it worse. :)

Zainab has got a gift with words.

I was digging it too for a minute. But it does sound good.

Regardless of the funnyness (is that a word?) I DID learn a lot from this thread.

Can someone tell me if I was the only one who was prescribed Ampicilin as an anti-malaria drug before going to Africa (Nigeria)?

My doc prescribed 6 weeks worth, and I had to start taking it a month before I left, and continue to take it until it was gone.

Was I duped? I will tell you a WICKED side effect that the antibiotic had on me.....Well, let's just say "remember that antibiotics sometimes cancel-out birth control medications." Without going into details, let's just say that mother nature came to visit and SHE STAYED VISITING FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS OUT OF THE 4 WEEKS I WAS THERE.

So, am I the only person that has ever been prescribed antibiotics as an anti-malarial med? Was I even protected during that entire month?

Oh well.....

Ummm Stevi, malaria is caused by a parasite, ampicillin is an antibiotic and is not even on the list of recommended antimalarial drugs.

There are some antibiotics (like doxycycline) which are used for malaria prophylaxis, but it is not commonly used because it is an antibiotic and has some serious side effects.

I think you were duped.

Zee, it WAS Doxycylcline. I just checked with my sister. But still, the side effects almost ruined my trip. I guess it's now spilled milk. I made the trip, enjoyed myself, made it home safely and one year later, I still don't have Malaria.

thank you for the info Zee.

I had to take Doxycycline before my trip, during and after. It wasn't a pretty sight either for me. The night before my trip I became so nauseated. I thought I wouldn't be able to go. It wore off soon though after I ate something. Then I read the bottle "Take with food". DUH! I chose to take Doxy because all the other anti-malaria meds seemed to have way to many contraindications for my liking. Doxy also was good for the belly too. It is suppose to help with stomach maladies and diarrhea.

If you had any conditions where the usual prophylaxis was contraindicated then maybe that was the reason for him giving you

doxycline but usually it is combined with 1 or 2 other drugs to be effective.

Clindomyacin is also used with Chloroquinine.

Prophylaxis ( prevention ) differs also from treatment used for acute Malaria.

Antibiotic is often used in the treatment for Malaria in Africa, though again mixed with other anti malaria drugs.

Thanks, but the prescrip was specifically for anti-malarial in preparation for my trip. I guess he really did not know what he was doing. I made the appointment specifically for that reason. He just duped me, I guess. How unprofessional. Anyhow, I don't see that doc anymore, Thank Goodness.
