Hi there,

When they say certified documents do they mean certified from where you got the document. Exp: Police report with a seal, or can you get something certified by seeing a notary? Anyone have any idea?

Thanks,

Lissa

Yep, certified means that its been certified as a true copy by whatever agency or entity you've gotten the document from.

Meh

Now if it was not possible to get these documents certified, would having them notarized suffice for USCIS. I really don't want to send in my originals in fear that they may lose them.

A US notary really cannot do anything to certify or authenticate a document...

YMMV

The misinformed line told me that photocopies are ok, however the originals maybe be requested to compare.

Our register of deeds USE to make certified copies, but they don't do that anymore, I have no idea where to go to make a certified copy. I know that police reports are available, but you have to go to that department and pay a couple of bucks to get them. They wanted copies of our marriage certificate, but it is against our state law to make copies of them, so we contacted the country we were married in and received a certified copy. Just like I had to contact the state I was in to get a certified copy of my birth certificate that was required by the State Department to get a passport. They also want the original naturalize certificate to be sent in and have been known to lose them, 400 bucks for a new copy of that from the USCIS.

Least with SS with an office in every county, can bring in both the originals and the copies for them to look at, and they just keep the copies. But was told by every professional copy place in town, it is illegal to copy a green card, but yet the USCIS wants a copy of that, both front and back. So I broke the law in my own home, do have a very good scanner, but purchased a 30 buck ink jet that I pitched because the want 60 bucks for a new color cartridge. Wanted to send in color with a readable back of the green cards.

Suppose to bring all the originals in if called in for an interview, always get nervous about that, not with my documents as the USC, but with my wife's and daughter's from a foreign country, we had to pay a small fortune for those and would have to fly down to get them. They never asked to see the originals yet! But if I don't bring them, they will want to see them.

I suppose you have to contact the court house or wherever those charges were filed and pay for a copy, and those are public records by the way. Kind of stupid about medical privacy, was in a major accident and the opposing insurance company got all the medical records from the day I was born. Even forgot about spraining my ankle in high school football or injuries in the military, non-combat, but they had all those records. And now they are part of public property for anyone to see.

I had the court record in Canada sealed aprox 10 years ago. The court informed me to keep the paperwork that I have because I cannot get it again.
