Nadal dethrones Federer at Wimbledon

Nadal...the first Spaniard to win Wimbledon since Manolo Santana in 1966.

WIMBLEDON, England (AP)—Rafael Nadal ended Roger Federer’s five-year reign at Wimbledon on Sunday, winning a riveting, five-set marathon to claim his first title at the All England Club and signal a changing of the guard in men’s tennis.

Nadal held off a stirring comeback by Federer from two sets down to prevail 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7. He became the first man to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year since Bjorn Borg in 1980.

God, I think that was the most thrilling tennis match I've seen in my life. Felt sorry for Federer, though I love Nadal.

A Spaniard also won the first stage of the tour de france - Spain is having a good week in sports

It was. I had to leave during the time that it looked like rain may postpone the conclusion of the match so I missed the end (left when they were in the 5th set and fast approaching another tie breaker).

Although the tennis was amazing, I did have to admire Federer's ability to look fresh, cool and like he just flounced out of a Noel Coward play after drinking a few g&ts after playing the longest match in the history of the tournament, while Nadal looked like a hot and sweaty mess.

I saw part of the match at the gym - and one amazing shot where Nadal returned a shot at the corner of the base-line and landed the ball within a foot of the Feders side of the net. Always cool when there's an upset - back in the 90's Pete Sampras used to win Wimbledon so consistently and totally that watching the final was always a bit boring as the result was a foregone conclusion.

His (Federer) face reminds me of a younger Jimmy Conners.

Yep. That's what made it exciting to watch for me too. :)

Seriously! LOL

I was glad for the rain delays, I got to see the end of the match -- and that was stressful enough, I don't think I could have watched the whole match! Nothing against Roger, he's great, but I have to say it's nice when someone else wins once in a while!

What I saw was fantastic. I love epic matches like this, especially the finals.
