The Thirteen Colonies

One of my wife's friends was asked to name the 13 colonies so we are trying how to organized them for easier memorization considering the going brain dead factor when being tested. Plus her country is divided into districts with rather long Spanish names, I know I would have a very difficult time with that.

One method we came up with was to divide the colonies by their location and those starting with "New". Like this.

Northern Colonies (three to remember)

Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island

“New” Colonies (three to remember)

New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York

Southern Colonies (six to remember or twice three)

Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia

That just leaves..

Pennsylvania

Ha, the Power Ball state as that is where the Declaration of Independence was signed at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

If there is an easier way to remember these colonies, let me know. My problem is knowing all the New England states and confusing the newer ones that weren't there when this country was first formed.

I invented a mnemonic - a sentence I could remember where the first letter of each word is the first letter of each of the 13 states.

I won't bore you with my own because it's personal to myself, but I did find it really helpful in memorising the 13 names.

I wasn't asked the question about the first 13 at my interview though. :-)

I wouldn't ever consider Delaware as being part of the South in anyway...

While one of my wife's friends was asked that question, commented to her, that is a very difficult answer to keep track of unless they wanted the colonies in alphabetical order. Ha, was counting on my fingers when I asked her that, and wasn't sure if she said Maryland twice. Ha, then after July 4, 1776, not colonies anymore, but states. Ha, then she asked me why we call them states, one of those English words that have more than eleven different meanings.
