Dear Friends,

Just a quick question, can my fiance apply for his SSN at any office in New York City? Or does it have to be the office closest to our new home in Brooklyn?

(Also, does it matter that all the addresses on his immigration forms are in New Jersey? When i filed for his visa, i was living in Jersey and using my permanent address in Jersey... We don't have to go to NJ for the SSN card, do we?)

Thanks!!

Al Hayat,

There's a big SS Card Center in Brooklyn (625 Fulton Street) - you should probably go there,

just to be safe. They also seem to be more efficient than smaller offices - I got my SS card

there in 5 days.

Regarding the NY/NJ situation - you're supposed to notify USCIS of any change of address,

but I don't think the SSA cares - they'll mail the card anywhere you like.

Actually, I believe that Card Center is the only place in Brooklyn that handles issuance of Social Security cards. Other local offices deal mainly with questions regarding Social Security benefits, rather than the cards themselves.

Per the SSA website (http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html):

In order to enhance public service and strengthen the integrity of the Social Security Number, the Social Security Administration has opened six Social Security Card Centers. People who live or receive mail in Orlando, FL, Brooklyn, NY, Queens, NY, Las Vegas, NV, or the Phoenix, AZ metropolitan areas must apply at one of the following Social Security Card Centers.

Brooklyn (New York) Social Security Card Center
- Serving people who live or receive mail in Brooklyn (Kings County), New York:

625 Fulton Street, Sixth Floor

Brooklyn NY, 11201

Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Thanks, MaWilson & IJ 1999,

Just another note: Do i have to inform them of my change of address, i asked that question a couple of weeks ago, and everyone responded that it is not necessary??

It makes sense in my mind to inform USCIS, but others just told me to Adjust Status, using the new address and not worry about an official change of address. Please advise....

My hubbie isn't here yet by the way, if that makes any difference? 11 more days!!!!!!! :dancing:

Not going to matter if all the documents have a NJ address, since anyone can apply at a Card Center.

If the address you are going to use on the application is within the Card Center's area you must apply at a Card Center. SSA will mail the card to whatever address you use on the application.

From what I understand the Brooklyn Card Card Center has an immigration person there, so verifications can be done faster. The other good thing about the 2 Card Centers in New York is that they have evening hours, since everyone that must apply there must apply in person.

Individuals can obtain the address and directions to Social Security offices from the Social Security Office Locator:

http://www.ssa.gov/locator

If one of the following Brooklyn area offices is an individual's local office, he or she must submit his or her SSN application at a Card Center.

The following field offices service Brooklyn, New York:

-- Kings Plaza

-- Bushwick

-- Williamsburg

-- Avenue X

-- Canarsie

-- Cypress Hills

-- Bedford Stuyvesant

-- Crown Heights

-- Boro Hall

-- Bay Ridge

-- Flatbush

-- East New York

How Do I Report a Change of Address to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS):

If he's asked for the address he'll be staying, he should give the new address. If asked why it's different, you moved recently. You can then simply use the new address from this point forward. No need to make a notification. You'll file AOS with the new address.

Hey

Just a quick note if you go to the Fulton Street center - prepare for a long wait. I was standing in line for 2 hours before I was seen. Oh, and make sure you don't take any liquids or sharp items as you won't be able to get in unless you throw them out. Security will NOT hold personal items for you.

Is it a federal office building or private? The liquids seems kind a stupid unless you are carrying a bottle of bleach or drain cleaner. That go for no sodas or bottled water?

Sharp objects seems to be a no brainer if going into a SSA office.

It's a federal office building with airport-style security. They weren't allowing any drinks through, apart from water - but even then people had to argue their case to keep it.
