Is it possible to open the joint account before our marriage? To help get things rolling..

-Richard

Any bank should be able to open a joint account for any two people who can meet Patriot Act requirements to prove their identity. It will probably contribute, but not prove the marriage is legitimate, because any one can open a joint account with any one else. Having little money in it may suggest to them that the account is for show - so make sure you qualify your financial situation so they don't wonder where the account with the money is.

Hi Rich,

Everyone has given good advice. Newlyweds, at the time they file the I-130, do not need to present the same evidence of financial mingling as 'old' married couples. Other than the marriage certificate, my kids included things that might be considered by most to be more appropriate for the I-129F, fiance visa process. They got married at the Amphur (magistrate) and did not even have wedding pictures. They did send a few pictures dating from the beginning of their relationship. The ones of our families together were probably very convincing. They also sent evidence of having traveled together, passport stamps, visas etc. I wrote an affidavit and had it notarized. It was a narrative of how I saw their relationship develop, and how I knew those things. There was perhaps one phone bill and a couple of emails and a couple of receipts.

For the interview they will have evidence of having merged some of their finances, a lot of phone bills, some cards and original photos (with copies). They're also have a time line.

As long as it's all believable and true, you should be okay.

That is fine, I heard of people sending way less and had no problem. Also, they are much more interested in getting evidence that marriage is based on love - not interest, then showing your previous intention to go back home. Everybody knows that marriage based AOS gets pardon even if you overstay for a very long time. As long as you are real and your intentions good, they will know it.
