And better hockey teams!!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

snorkydewd, how do I contact you?

I checked with several attorney's and unfortunately it appears that the only way I can be with my "Soul Mate" is to give up my country and go to her country, Canada. The United States is making me choose living with my lover over living in my country. This is pathetic !!!!! As an American citizen I should be able to have both, country and love.... Being gay / lesbian shouldn't be reason enough to have to abandon your own country. I love my g/f more than my country and will do whatever it takes to be with her someday. We need new laws in America.

Unfortunately it is just the way it is. Regardless though, someone ALWAYS has to give up their country and in this case it might have to be you. Giving up your country sometimes feels like the ultimate sacrifice, especially if you love it. However, there is a reason for it and you have to keep in mind that end goal of being together in the same place.

As ANY citizen, you should be able to have both country and love but that is not how it is in a lot of countries in the world, not just the US. You are faced with a very unfortunate reality.

Yup.

You could always move to Alberta together. Its just like living in Texas, but with free healthcare. Nearly American. . . .

How is living in Alberta like living in Texas? The weather or what? Where is Alberta located? I thought Canada was COLD lol.

Oil my friend - sweet black oil:

In all truth - Alberta is probably one of the least friendly Canadian provinces to same-sex marriage (besides Nova Scotia). Both governments took great lengths to try and stop the federal government from recognizing same sex marriage as equal under the law a few years back. Alberta spearheaded the initiative and objections to the Supreme Court of Canada. Unfortunately, we had a Premier with more money than god and fewer brains than an amoeba who felt this was a good expenditure of time and tax-payers money.

Fortunately in Canada, same sex marriage is a federal matter with provinces only having jurisdiction to register marriages. As a result, regardless that provinces may disagree with same-sex marriages, they do not have the ability to control what constitutes a valid marriage. So you are free to live and have a valid marriage in any of the Canadian provinces.

I am sorry to hear that you do not have much in the way of options to marry and be with your loved one. That is an extraordinary decision to have to make. Perhaps - if you decide to move to Canada, by the time you become a citizen (if that is something you choose), the United States will be more accepting of same sex marriage and this will be reflected in the immigration laws of your country.

Its never easy to move - but I am sure its even more difficult when you have no other options available. (F)

Thanks. Here's an update which is not good. I took her back to Canada to visit her family and when we tried returning to the USA, the USA border would not let her back in to my country to visit me. They said she was a "risk" for trying to stay in the USA. So the economy is way down, thanks to Mr. George (#######) Bush and his republicans, thus my house value is down, restricting me from selling and moving to Canada to be with my lover. I can still visit Canada, easily I may add, but it costs me over $300.00 in gasoline each trip. Being on a fixed income, it's not something I can do all the time. We "cam", talk on the phone and email. God I miss my girlfriend's hugs and kisses. My only hope right now, which is slim to none, is that Barak Obama is elected President and he someday allows gays and lesbians the same rights as straights to sponsor their lover.

Thanks again to all who have offered advice, articles and well wishes. I wish you all well in your fight to be with your soul mate / lover.

Tired but not giving up...

That so sucks!

It happened to me January 2007 and so a year of paperwork and voila I got here...

None of it ideal and I realize my ability to do this is only because of being hetero.

So sorry to hear of what is happening in your worlds.

Now that gay marriage is legal in California, I wonder: If you are a resident of California, can you apply for a same-sex Fiancee Visa?? It should be allowed, since you are allowed to marry yes?

The Federal government doesn't recognize same-sex marriage, even if the states do, unfortunately.

Hi and THANKS for all your precious comments and true feelings. Everytime I read about someone finally being with their soul mate, it makes me smile inside and out.

I watched the VP debate last night & althought I was pleased that both Palin & Biden weren't totally against giving gays some rights (few I might add) both convinced me that neither will defend gay marriage nor allow for us to sponsor our foreign lover to become a USA citizen.

I just got my check so I'm packing to go visit my honey before it gets snowy and freezing cold up there :-)

TC all and GL and God Bless... ick....

It is going to be like interracial marriage---sometime in the next few years, the courts are going to decide the fundamental right to marry the partner of one's choosing is a right we ALL enjoy, and 20 years later it will seem absolutely astonishing that gay marriage was ever banned.

I was a little surprised Palin said she thought at least gay couples should not be prevented from visiting each other in the hospital. I was NOT surprised at Biden's response, though I was a bit appalled at how emphatically he said he opposed gay marriage.

None of which helps Ick and her partner right now.
