I think it is pretty gutsy for the SO men from other countries coming to the US. It would be brutal not to be able to work or to work at something less than what you did in your original country.

NOA 2. Really?

When do you think you or your honey will be in the US? Do you plan on having a traditional wedding, a civil ceremony or both? What's your biggest worry about coming here/your SO coming here?

for me:

-end of April/beg of May :P (his job wants 3 months notice and my SO will give notice when he has the visa in hand)

-no traditional wedding until 2010, if we do have one. I'm not sure that I want a wedding. Civil ceremony at city hall when he gets here

-my biggest worry is that he'll be bored out of his mind before he gets the EAD and that once he gets the EAD he'll have a hard time finding a job that he likes -- especially with the challenging economy. hopefully it'll be better by the fall.

What is his job in France ? If he has a 3 months notice he might have a good career :)

When: When he's saved enough money to cover the 3 months he won't be able to work... :(

Wedding: Something ultra simple, inexpensive, and local; a couple places we have in mind have quickie packages so we don't have to do the courthouse. Renew our vows in 1-2 years in Vegas with a more proper ceremony and fly out our families and friends

Biggest concern: Same as now. Money & job concerns.

Still waiting on the damn police certificate. Andy's Internet was down all week, so we had to settle for short phone calls. We've been pinching every penny, so it was an unhappy extra expense. I don't feel like posting much since all I do is complain about the same things.

IT Engineer. Pretty decent :) He says that he's prepared to not work for 3 or so months...trying to look at the bright side but I dunno. As Corinthians said, I think it's a big sacrifice to move from your home country to the US, to quit your job etc. I don't think I could do the same, not right now anyway. I don't speak french and my job skills aren't really transferable without knowing the language.

As soon as you get your police cert, you'll be on your way. I'm thinking of a "renew our vows" type of thing but I'm still not sure if I want to spend $20-$30k on a wedding. Seems like I should keep that money for something else. Maybe I'll feel different in a year.

Holy cow, I know some people spend that on weddings, but I think it's insane to go in debt for it. I'm thinking like $2000 for a renewal (very do-able in Vegas) which would still have all the dress, tux, flowers, photos, cake, reception, etc (Little Chapel of Flowers looks like my favorite). Ofc there's additional expense to fly there and stay a few days, but I see it as the delayed honeymoon.

Andy also really wants to do the renewal so that we have the celebration with our families to look back on. This year we won't be able to afford a ceremony like we want to remember.

I agree. My SO isn't familiar with consumer debt (altho he will be once he moves to the US hehehe) so there's no way he'd sign on for that much debt, which means we'd have to save for a wedding but I don't wanna save that much money and then spend it on a party... I know for some people it means a lot to have a really nice expensive wedding, I don't think it matters that much to me. I'd rather spend that on a house but I also don't want to look back 10 years from now and regret not having a wedding.

The little chapel of flowers, it is where we will get married in march :) !!!

Just Jamie and I will be in Vegas, we will stay 3 days at the Bellagio, then the week-end after we will have a party with our friends at home.

For the work I'm kinda lucky because I'm copy-writer freelance and I can keep my job (like I did last year when I was in the US). My clients are all french companies and they don't care if I work from LA or from France.

How did you get into freelance? Did you start off working at a firm? Just curious :) Your job sounds fantastic!

Well, I worked in an advertising agency for several years. Then at the end of 2006 I met Jamie in Milan during the Chili Peppers tour, I'm a fan and I follow them on tour and Jamie works for them. It was very strong between us and we found out that the long distance couldn't kill our love. So, after 2007 of seeing each other every couple months we had to take a decision. Jamie works as a sound engineer for big american bands, so it was difficult for him to find this kinda place in Europe. I didn't want to do another job cuz' I love it, so I discovered that it was pretty simple to open my own buisness. So, I left my job at the end of november 2007 and began my freelance, I was kinda worried about french companies, I wondered if thay would be ok to work with somebody who is 6000 miles away. But it is not a problem for them, I have my bberry all the time close to my bed so even if I have an emergency during the night (the day in France) I can handle it.

That's really nice that you can continue to work and keep your business despite the move. My SO will definitely have to quit his job but I live in the Bay Area and there's lots of tech companies here so I don't think he'll have trouble finding a job. I just don't think he'll be able to keep the same title. A little hardwork though, I think my SO will be able to find a good job and move up.

I love the Bellagio. I love Vegas. My fiance is already planning a trip there this summer. Can't wait.
