I am from Ontario Canada and am moving to Nacogdoches when I get my Visa. Are there lots of differences between Ontario and Texas driving? I've driven in Texas a lot and haven't noticed any yet.

A lot less snow... ;)

I'm in Houston and I don't think there is anything too major to worry about. You can turn right on a red light but beware of cameras they've set up for those who don't make a full stop. I can't think of anything that would really be that different.

hey folks,

I'm studying at the moment for my texas drivers license so that when the time comes when I do eventually finish the AOS process, I can get my ssn and take the test, even though I can drive for up to a year on my UK license.

What are your experiences of the written and practical test for those of you who have taken it?

Thanks,

Kat :luv:

It is terrible.. dont go in the busy office like Dallas, Go to forney area or Mesquitte Area.. In Dallas when you pass the written test, and you will take the road test, you need to come at 3am to fall in line because if you came at 5 am, the line will be closed already, trust me.. They accept only 40 person in one day.. Some examiner in that office is so strict especially the chinese lady.. Written is easy because you can study, if you are already a driver dont worry about the road test.. but worry about the examiner..(hehehe) Goodluck

I'm bumping this topic back up. What are the requirements to get a TX driver's license? We're doing the K1 Visa. Can my fiance get his DL before we get married? Or do we have to wait for the AOS or anything in particular? This is something I've gotten lots of mixed info about. Thanks!

Nope, he must have GC or EAD in hand, and I think now SSN is mandatory.

lol thanks for the replies...I kinda meant are there any legal differences. Like are you not allowed to turn right on a red light and stuff like that.

Main legal differences I've encountered (Manitoba vs. Utah):

Median turn lanes that fade in and out of existence can be confusing when you're doing the road test in a neighborhood you've never driven through before.

Unlike in Canada, you signal an intent to parallel park by signaling towards the curb, NOT by pumping the breaks three times (which might be just a Manitoba thing)

Your are allowed to do a wide u-turn all the way around/through a 4 way stop sign intersection.

They frown on you coming to unnecessary stops in at uncontrolled intersections in [unfamiliar] residential zones. Not my fault every single intersection in every single residential zone in Winnipeg is a 4 way stop and I just do it by instinct :)

I sailed through the written test, 29/30 questions correct (as if I'll EVER need to know that a learner's permit is a provisional drivers license! Dang Utah legal jargon.)

I did as bad as you can possibly do on the road test (20 pts worth of errors, where 21 is a failure), but I still passed!:thumbs::devil:

DON'T PANIC

My fiance wants me to take the learner's permit test (Texas) next week. Any tips on what the questions were mostly about? Like which chapters from the handbook should I focus on? Thanks in advance! :D Edited by dan.and.audrey

DPS wont let you take the test until you have the EAD or GC. It's a new law since November.

We went last week and try to get a Texas ID, they said you need at least 6 months left on your visa....this mean that you wont get it until EAD or GC at the earliest.

I'm not talking about the Driver's License yet...just the Learner's Permit (for me to learn how to drive). Do they still require the EAD or GC?

I have read there have been lawsuits to strike this down. Has anyone heard if there is any pending legal action to remove the requirements? I have already contacted my State Senator to express my displeasure and explain the financial hardship this creates.

I am also considering taking my wife to Oklahoma to get a license, surrender the OK license for a Texas license. Has anyone done anything similar? Is this a bad idea, that down the road could come back to bite us?

Your responses are greatly appreciated.

There was a lawsuit on behalf of some Mexican women who hadn't renewed their EAD so couldn't renew their license as I recall, until they got their cards. There was also displeasure over the license issued for temporary visitors looking different and thus discriminatory to non-green card holders because it called attention to them as different. I don't know if those were resolved yet.

The law is over two years old now. October 1, 2008. Here's something I posted twice recently concerning the change.

Concerning the issuance of driving licenses to K1s--- You are in a tiny minority and will go through a limbo phase where you feel like you're a "nothing" because most of the rules are for other visas, etc. Rules in most states have changed due to pressure from the federal government and Homeland Security because of illegal immigration crackdowns.

Texas was issuing 6 year licenses with any proper identification of legal entry into the US. If you had a valid anything, you'd get a 6 year license. Once you've got a driver's license to show for ID, you appear as "legal" as any native born. People were coming from all over to get a TX DL because other states had already amended their rules.

Now most states will issue a license only for the period of legal presence in the US. Getting a DL with an
EAD
card will give you a DL that expires in one year (date on
EAD
card.) If you had 7 months left on another visa, you could get a license that would expire in 7 months. A K1 get's 90 days and in most states that isn't considered long enough to bother giving a license. A minimum of 1 year legality is more the norm, which is why an
EAD
card works. Expect to go back and pay again for full length license if you get one on the
EAD
. That might be just a month after getting
EAD
. It makes sense how it is set up if you consider homeland security and attempts to limit ways that illegal immigrants can appear legal.

I think you will find the same rules in Oklahoma. If they would give her a license based on her I-94, the license would expire on her 90th day in the US. Oklahoma also issues licenses marked Temporary Visitor which would surely tip off Texas to ask for proof of legal status beyond her soon-to-expire Oklahoma license. Blame the Department of Homeland Security for your hardship. I'm curious what financial hardship does it create for you?

You could minimize the time by filing for AOS/EAD/AP asap. EAD would arrive in around 60 days and would get her a Temporary Visitor license good for one year. However there could be a sudden backlog created by the flood of people filing now to avoid the increased fees that go into effect on Tuesday 11/23/2010.
