I'm in love with a wonderful Scottish man. I find American men and Scottish men extremely similiar in many ways, even down to the football. I'd also like to hear some funny stories and even some cultural problems some have experienced. My funny story I suppose would be that everyone he spoke too in Tennessee asked him if he was Australian. Now it's a private joke between us and he'll say something to me like " well then again, you know I AM Australian" LOL

1 sheep's lung (illegal in the U.S.; may be omitted if not available)

1 sheep's stomach

1 sheep heart

1 sheep liver

1/2 lb fresh suet (kidney leaf fat is preferred)

3/4 cup oatmeal (the ground type, NOT the Quaker Oats type!)

3 onions, finely chopped

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

1/2 teaspoon cayenne

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

3/4 cup stock

Wash lungs and stomach well, rub with salt and rinse. Remove membranes and excess fat. Soak in cold salted water for several hours. Turn stomach inside out for stuffing.

Cover heart and liver with cold water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Chop heart and coarsely grate liver. Toast oatmeal in a skillet on top of the stove, stirring frequently, until golden. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Loosely pack mixture into stomach, about two-thirds full. Remember, oatmeal expands in cooking.

Press any air out of stomach and truss securely. Put into boiling water to cover. Simmer for 3 hours, uncovered, adding more water as needed to maintain water level. ####### stomach several times with a sharp needle when it begins to swell; this keeps the bag from bursting. Place on a hot platter, removing trussing strings. Serve with a spoon. Ceremoniously served with "neeps, tatties and nips" -- mashed turnips, mashed potatoes, nips of whiskey.

AYE! THE BELOVED SCOTTISH HAGGIS! LOL

I had haggis as a child, I remember that it wasn't that bad in taste - I think I quite enjoyed it. Course, then my mother told me what was in it and I promptly emptied my stomach contents into the loo.

Then I became vegetarian for 15 years. :P

Edit: Btw, most Americans think Brits are Australian. ;)

yes, but since most Brits couldn't tell the difference between a US or Canadian accent, I don't see it as all that odd.

Hey, I didn't mean it as an insult. ;)

I get asked if I am Australian all the time at work. It gets to the point now where I know that they have obviously had a bet over where I'm from. One has picked Australian, one Irish (red hair/blue eyes, apparently means I'm Irish!) and the other British.

I can tell a Canadian accent most of the time now, but only because I've made an effort to educate myself regarding these accents.

and I wasn't insulted... :star:

What I think is funny though is that some people (not saying anyone on this thread) will speak about "the American accent"...as if there is just one. My FIL thought I'd sound like "howdy pardner" for some reason. I'd hazard a guess that there isn't a country on the planet that doesn't have different regional accents, and the more regions with multiple influences...the more accents. I can finally distinguish Scottish from Irish, and Welsh is identifiable. I can pick out several English accents, even though I'll still get stuck on a Midlands, for instance. But I can hear more of the northern ones and of course an East London one. Language is fun...

When I was in the UK I was only aware of 3 or so USA accents. New York (Bronx/Queens), Southern (Texas/Arkansas/Deep South) and the generic TV USA accent. I knew there must be more, I'd just never heard them.

I had no idea that people in Boston talk differently - we used to watch Ally McBeal in the UK, y'see! :P

Now I know, of course, that there are loads of different accents. :D

when I lived in the UK many people assumed I was Canadian - and everyone thought the Canadian guy in the office was American
