At 1 p.m. (WST), I talk to Maria. She said, "I'm on my way out of the house right now, don't worry!" This is a good thing, since the street that she lives on was flooded due to heavy rains yesterday. Rains also damage the phone lines, making communication nearly impossible in the barrios south of Barranquilla.

Now, it's 6:20 p.m. on the West Coast, and I can't get through to Maria. Either her service was 'switched off' to save money, or it is down, or a combination of the two. I'm going to visit a friend and work on my Jeep. This will keep my mind off of things, and I'll be focused on something entirely different - which is what has helped me in difficult times.

I'll keep everyone posted, and hopefully later tonight, I'll hear something.

Nope, but Maria has clients that live in Onelis' sector, so this will happen...eventually. When I reach Onelis, I will get her (new) cell phone number, and phone numbers of 2 or 3 people that she knows that live near her. We once went 2 weeks w/o contact, but after doing some nail jobs, she had enough pesos to use the internet for 5 min. to send me an email. I'm thinking the Internet in her barrio is down because of the torrential rains causing the phone lines to malfunction. So, I'm on standby... :crying:

Damn Ken I am sorry for not offering to help you. We bussed through Barranquilla last night during these rains. It took 45 minutes...

It appears that her family had an eye infection, and everyone was so sick that they were unable to leave the house for a number of days. As a result, the phone bill went unpaid, and we lost contact on June 11th.

Maria went to Onelis' home with one of her Documentation clients who lives near Onelis in the Los Cedros section of Soledad - just south of Barranquilla. Maria was able to get Onelis' cell phone number (which will be working tomorrow along w/her land line), and we will be able to connect over the phone. My mounting stress has finally been eased since now I will be able to talk to Onelis and thoughts of home invasions or major illness are now an afterthought.

One more thing...Onelis' mother was angry at Onelis for not contacting me to let me know that I had been anxious to hear from her. She voiced her frustration to Onelis that Maria had to be sent to their home to find out if they were safe. Now, I have Onelis' cell phone, and I plan to get the phone number of the Visa applicant who lives near Onelis...just in case! :bonk:

Thanks again for everyone's concern. I was going insane 1 hour ago, and now I'm breathing a serious sigh of relief, and I'll be able to enjoy the 4th of July weekend with my relatives and 4WD club down in Mexico!! B)
