I'm baaack!

Actually, I never left. Just took a break from the Internet and got some rest. Barranquilla is my favorite city I have ever visited. The place feels like my home away from home. Real cozy and so down-to-earth.

In college, I was a big party animal, so Carnival resonated with me for some strange reason. I love Cumbia music, and hearing the authentic music was out of this world. If I can ever go back again for Carnavales, I certainly will. The rest of Colombia was definitely there, soaking up the atmosphere...

I plan on visiting Barranquilla with my Mother next month. She has been very upset and depressed for the past two months, and I think a place as wild as Barranquilla will shake those thoughts from her mind temporarily. She will see that there is so much happening on this planet that life is continuing for everyone this very moment. Hopefully, this will help her see that there are people in different parts of the world that love her and accept her into their family.

My parents went everywhere as a couple. Most recently, they had visited; Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Alaska, and were planning for this summer to be their big USA roadtrip, visiting Oklahoma, Tennessee, and all along the East Coast including Washington D.C. - That's while driving from Southern CA.

She's so upset, because she is stuck at home w/nobody to visit or travel to. I told Mom to cheer up, because we have new (almost) family in Colombia I want her to become acquainted with. She needs to make this trek before she gets to elderly (she's 76 now).

I wanted to see Santa Marta again, but the humidity might bother my mom. So, we'll take easy day trips to the northern section of Barranquilla where the cool breezes keep the temperatures down. Also, Puerto Colombia for shopping and for a visit to a local seafood restaurant.

I plan on taking my mother to a nearby mall each day (if possible) for lunch at the food court, and to walk in Air Conditioned comfort for exercise.

But, the main reason for our visit will be to see Leidys' family every day, and to maybe drag her to a small, intimate nightclub where she can hear some real Latin music.

Nothing real major, just getting myself out of town, and getting my Mother to experience life in a different part of the world. Before she knows it, she will have forgotten what has been on her mind, and by the time we return back to the US, she will have felt like she had a vacation, but made a good number of friends at the same time.

What a great gift for your mom Ken. I have to give her loads of credit for making the journey. A road trip will do her good too (and won't do you any harm either)..

Hey Ken, good that you are pushing your mom to begin exploring life again. My Dad took some time off to reflect on things when my mother passed so I know it is not that easy. I am sure she will love Barranquilla like I was able to enjoy it. I stayed at the Barranquilla Plaza and the Del Prado hotels during my brief stay. That picture you have of Leidys overlooking the street below.. Is this where you watched the Carnivales? Where was this at? I only ask because Adriana has told me she wants me to try seeing the Carnival next year in February.
