Carnaval is Coachella at its' peak hour - Barranquillas headlining moment, when everyone emerges from mist-sprayed VIP lounges to catch that special performance in front of tens of thousands on a cool, breezy night.

The winds blew on this evening as Guachernas breezes blew liquid bubbles through the air. After walking Leidys to the bus stop along the idled main thoroughfare - Murillo boulevard, watching her board the bus, I walked back to the 'Majestic. Passing through the main Cathedrals' park plaza, I saw some of the parade's transvestite talent now hitting up couples sitting on park benches enjoying the cool, but still humid respite. At this point, I knew I had seen everything.

As I watched a long-wigged Go-Go in heels begging a couple for a paid laison, the boyfriend - clearly bothered, pointed to me as he told the actress to proposition someone else. I stared back in surprise and kept walking - alone to my hotel and to a conclusion of 24 hours that began innocently enough in the Los Angeles International airport and ending on the streets of post-party, pre-Carnaval Barranquilla - a city aligned with one of the worlds greatest festivals that happens in my own backyard of Inland, Southern California.

Today, I return to my daily struggle. Where my senses deaden and instincts take over. My rat race. In Barranquilla, I felt my senses reawaken, like the UK hit, "We Come Alive" by Dougal/Gammer.

I felt a true awakening, for all of the togetherness and observations I was able to take in.

Deja Vu

After a surprising discovery of <<Pulgas>> crawling under the covers of my $140,000 COP/night hotel room, I was shifted from room 117 to room 119. Early in the morning, I was offered room 120. After observing the painting of a baby suckling his mothers bosom, I realized this was a room Onelis and I shared in 2007.

Unpacking my clothes, I was able to shower, then rush downstairs for breakfast in the Moorish-themed restaurant. There, I spotted an attractive couple. The gentleman originated from Quebec, his girlfriend from a barrio just north of the airport - Nuevo Soledad, not far from Onelis' Los Cedros barrio.

Benoit, or "Benito" as he called himself (for the benefit of the Spanish-speaking locals) explained that he had traveled throughout South America. Visiting every country with the exception of Chile on the continent. Benoit stayed with the native people of the Lake Titicaca area where he contracted a virus which spiked his temperature to 103 deg.F. Accumulating roughly 50 years, Benoit considered himself a worldly traveler, having required a local shaman to dance around his suffering body in the highlands of Peru where he eventually recovered. Benoit was now enjoying the company of a young brunette named Monica whom he met through a local agency. Benoit's Castellano wasn't the most effective, but he had a simple command of the language thanks to his native French.

After being asked what I was doing in Barranquilla besides experiencing Carnaval, our conversation shifted to personal safety and the media. Canada's national State Department has clearly stated that its' citizenry should not, "Visit Colombia" due to violence against its' countrypeople. "Just two days ago, a Canadian-born citizen was killed here in Barranquilla. While walking down the street with his wife, he was accosted for his personal laptop computer, shot and later died in the hospital" Benoit explained.

Monica trembled as she spoke to me in Spanish, "Barrio Bosque is terribly dangerous. You must be very careful there." She spoke of instances where, "Young men on motorcycles approach their victims, and with handguns shoot them whether they comply with their orders or not. These men simply love to shoot and kill innocent people."

Monica then kissed Benoit on his cheek and stepped out of the restaurant for a moment. Benoit quickly changed the subject to a more ubiquitous topic - relationships.

Benoit and Monica met on-line, and they had shared company 4 times within one year. I had asked Monica if she planned on getting married with Benoit, and she looked to the floor , giving a vague, lifeless response. I noted a hesitation in her voice.

Benoit complained about her always asking for money. Monica was back in their hotel room as "Benito" shared her, "Always asking for money - to help her uncle, to help for this...for that." Benoit looked flustered, and also confused. He explained his own situation as a self-employed, divorced father of two. He earns every Canadian dollar which gets inserted into the Western Union wire service, making its' way to Barranquilla on a monthly basis. "I don't send anything. Uh, I take that back. When I have money, which is almost never, I purchased a cell phone. Once, I wired $20 - but, it cost me $10, but that is all I had," I explained to Benito. "The problem is, my mortgage - my responsibilities. I just don't have the money to spread around. So, Leidys has to rely on my telephone calls, but I wouldn't want it any other way."

Benoit looked as if in a state of desperation when he asked me how I did things. His age and her beauty didn't seem to help matters. Benoit was a simple man - roughly 50 years of age. Monica, perhaps 25 - with a beautiful smile, masked by silver bracket, straightening her smile, framed by full-Costeña lips on her cream-toned skin. Monica was Colombian poetry, and she was quite aware. Benoit appeared to be pursuing Monica for her youthfulness, her beauty as well as for her companionship.
