Flying above the Atlantic, I´m actually on my way back to Barranquilla city. Deleting images from the digital camera, I was remindd of Andrew and David. Their former spouses now married and seemingly moving forward. I told VJer Carl on the phone last week how it felt to lose your two best friends in the span of 13 months.

Right in the middle, I got divorced from my terminally ill ex-wife. So, losing 3 friends in roughly 1 year literally had me on whatever verge or limit I could handle. South America served as my tonic to help deal with the pain.

Now, I can better empathize with my Octagenarian parents with all of the talk of funerals and physical decline they mention to me. My good friend James summed it up when telling me how he felt after his father died of Gan Green exposure recently. His Grandfather passed away immediately after his Vietnam veteran son had died. "All I saw was black."

At about 30,000 ft., all I see is white, and the reflection of the blue Atlantic below. While sitting at the Panama City airport with its´glistening cityscape constructed during the Noriega regeime, I realized how I´m past the pain that had me trying to run away from it all.

At the tiny Ernesto Cortizo Airport, Carnaval is everywhere. Special wall decorations contrast against institutional brick walls. A large cutout poster now hangs in the baggage claim area, and even the baggage inspectors wore Carnaval sombreros. Secretly, I had thought all of this was silly - up until I watched as a woman was serenaded by a full Cumbia Carnaval band as whe stepped out of the baggage claim area and into the taxi concourse. An elephant-masked adolescent danced provocatively to the cheers of other famalies waiting their loved ones. Looking around for Leidys, I decided it best to watch the dancing, record some of it, and wait my next move.

The dancers passed to the parking lot, their musicians dispursed, and looking around, I noticed Leidys waiting for me in the back of a taxi cab. In 30 minutes, we were at my hotel.

Hotel Majestic (www.hotelmajesticcolombia.com) is one of the best located hotels. We walked just 1 block to the Guacherna parade. Sitting atop a 2 level Pizzeria near The Mall - Portal del Prado, Leidys and I witnessed the streets fill to the estimation of 1 million revelers (citywide) with local revellers, their families, and travelers from all over the world (including myself). This event was a combination of Halloween and the Rose Parade.

DSC08562.JPG

Beginning at 9 p.m., the first performers made their way down the main route. Traditional Cumbia dancers witht heir dancing partners moved to the sound of amplified music with the crowds literally screaming, jumping, waving hands, leading me to realize how cool parades can be.

DSC08574.JPG

Having being raised on the Tournament of Roses parade which occurs in Pasadena, CA, I couldn´t think of a more mundane event to wait through in Barranquilla.

DSC08553.JPG

Then, came the Transvestites in blackface, and it all made sense - the reason I love Barranquilla is its similarities to the giant Coachella Festival. Instead of music and art tents, there are barrios. Barrios filled with all kinds of people (instead of newly discovered music groups). Barranquilla oozes people, moving from tent to tent - just like the throngs at Coachella.

She is smoking hot babe and love that smile. Carnaval sounds fun and hope to see and hear more.

Vicente "Chente" Fernandez, FTW!

a great actor too

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
