I remember one or two people talking about how awesome their digital camera was because it was waterproof. I forget who said it, but whoever said it please tell me what kind it was so I can take lots of underwater pics! Thanks :P

I watched this show where they did their best to test some 'shockproof' cameras to the limits, it was on the Gadget Show, and the camera that looked the best from their tests was the Olympus model

Sounds like an Olympus - the 770 SW is the latest version in that line I believe...

Pretty rugged, but the picture quality isn't as good as other cameras in the same price range. Plus you have to use XD memory cards which are pretty slow, meaning that there's a longer delay after you take a shot before you can take another.

Thanks! I was just trying to figure out what the hell to do for a camera when I go on vacation because I really don't want to be taking my super expensive camera on the beach. I have one that is almost brand new and not as expensive but the stupid azz camera doesn't have a freaking viewfinder. #######? Hard to take good pics in the sun when you're trying to look at a LCD screen.

I might be nitpicking here, but just remember that no piece of electronics is truly "waterproof" (unless, perhaps, it's within an air-tight case). In fact, if you look closely, most electronics will often say "water resistant" instead of using "waterproof." They do that to cover their butts, in the event that water does get into the device and damage or destroy it.

In general, anything labeled "water resistant" will mark how deep underwater it may go. Some devices can only get splashed while others can be submerged for a long time.

so it says waterproof to 33ft. are they lying?

Shockproof. Waterproof. Freezeproof. Crushproof. Introducing the world's most durable digital camera — the Olympus Stylus 770 SW. You can drop it (from 5ft), dunk it (to 33ft), freeze it (-10°C/14°F) or even try to crush it (up to 220lbf), and it will still take amazing photos. But the 770 SW isn't all brawn and no brains. It features a bright 2.5" Hypercrystal LCD so you can easily compose, view and share your images underwater or in direct sunlight. Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) creates sharp, blur-free pictures, even if your subject is moving. And the 27 Shooting Modes, including movie with sound, allow you to master any shooting situation.

No those olympus cameras are actually water-proof to 30 feet or something like that. My brother in law has one that he uses for scuba-diving.

They're not lying - they're tested to those tolerances. The interior electronics are basically shielded with rubber gaskets. The down-side to those cameras is that while they're quite small they're quite heavy - so carrying one around in your pocket feels like you've got a half-brick in there...

I'd have to test it to be sure, but... "waterproof" implies that there it is a physical impossibility (barring damage to the camera) for a single drop of water to enter the camera at any time, ever. Now maybe this is the case and technology has sufficiently advanced to the point where "waterproof" can be claimed, but in the past, that wouldn't have worked. Regardless, I'd still be careful with it. ;)

my daughter and her friends take their 'waterproof' camera into the pool and take great pictures all the time. I'm not sure what kind it is but it really does work great. I can find out if you like.
