Hi all

I would love some input. Because (like most of us) my family is so far away. We will be having a civil veremony at Paw Paw Town hall on a Friday and then a year to the date which will be a Saturday we will do the big thing. I'm guessing others will probably be doing something similar.

What should I wear to the civil wedding? What are others wearing or what have you worn?

If it were me, I would just wear something nice for the civil ceremony and save the big fancy wedding dress for the actual wedding.

I had a simple linen ivory dress with 3 large pink flowers embroided that you can barely see in the pictures (they are just outlined). It a dress I already owned. You can see it if you go to my profile.

Because some of our close family members wanted to be there I was given a bouquet and did my hair a special way.

So we dressed up nice but I wasn't wearing wedding clothes as is. Although a lot of people when they saw the pictures though it was a genuine wedding dress.

Anyway, I would say wear something nice, if it makes you happy go for white, off white or ivory tones. It can be a dress, a skirt and a pretty top, etc.

And keep the beautiful, fancy and expensive dress for the traditional wedding, it might not be the time when you will be officially married, but it's the time when you will share it with your family and that means a lot.

We didn't have a civil wedding(we had a somewhat traditional and somewhat ethnic wedding)...but I didn't wear the traditional western wedding dress. I wore an Indian style...lengha choli. If I had a civil ceremony, I'd still want to wear a pretty dress, but not the big white wedding dress. I'd still want white if it was going to be my only wedding. If another was planned for the future, I'd wear any color.

As our wedding was combined (conducted by ordained pastor, resident in the specific county), we had a more-or-less traditional Christian wedding; Pras wore a white sari with veil and tiara (see my profile picture for the veil/tiara), and I wore a black suit.

To the OP: have you checked the requirements in the county where you will be married? Generally, ordained clerics preaching and residing in the county are deputised to perform and register the wedding--so you may be able to integrate the two into one.

Ideally we would have a church wedding but as I would like to share the church wedding with my friends and family, currently based in the UK, Australia, South Africa, Canada and Scotland as well as from across the US. A years warning is required for some of them to plan time off, save those shiny pennies etc.

I had good friends who got married first with a minister, not a civil wedding but still just them, and then had a bigger wedding a year later. It all went well so I wish you the best! It's good that you will have more time to plan. I had to rush plan mine because I wanted to have one wedding and none of Sujeet's family was coming over for it so it was just for us here. I planned it in about 2 months, as soon as his visa was approved (I waited only b/c I was worried whether his visa would get approved right away since India interviews can be unpredictable). Still I am happy with how it turned out in only 2 months of planning! :P

I was too lazy to do anything traditional. I married in the same dress I graduated from high school, was awarded my scholarships in during college. It is still the only dress I own. I might start thinking to replace it. Might.

The piece of paper was far more important than what to wear, to be completely honest.

We're doing our wedding in 2 parts as well. A civil ceremony but with friends and family in attendance in the US at a medieval village. The church wedding will be next year in his family's church in Germany (that's the plan anyway, but oh how we know plans change!).

I'm not wearing a traditional wedding dress for either one.

I say wear what you want and whatever makes you feel beautiful :)

I'm wearing a 50's style sundress for the civil ceremony (in July) and a formal wedding dress for the celebratory service (in December). I thought about having the 2nd service at our anniversary date, but then I thought, "Florida in July with formal wear," and decided December would be a much better choice.

Our wedding was a garden ceremony in the summer. I found this dress at Ross Dress For Less. It was originally $89, was on sale for $30. It's not a "traditional" wedding dress...not even a wedding dress per se, but for me....Perfect! :D

I guess if you will be having a big wedding a year from now, pick something appropriate to the site of your civil ceremony. Putting on a special dress will add a little more magic to the day. Even though it is more of a formal thing, it is your real wedding day :). Flowers, dress, make up and hair are good additions to the most important thing - long-awated and trialed by US government marriage to your man!

We decided to have two weddings as well. Good friend of ours is a notorary, so she can marry us, even though we re still considering eloping :) I will have a real wedding dress for the big ceremony sometime next year. However, been somewhat a fashionista, I had to have a speical civil ceremony dress :). I thought about buying one from BCBG in Orlando (I adore their dresses), but than stambled upon the cutest dress online. I got my mom's designer friend to make a replica for me. We already picked the fabric so she should start cutting any day now :)

Actually, here is the dress. Would love to hear some input :)
