Just get a damn passport!

If we're so big on border control with Mexico, then WHY NOT Canada?

And if it's that easy to come in from Canada...how the hell do we know who's here visitor-wise if they can just fly to Canada & drive 'with a wave of the hand' and cross the border.

All these politicans fighting against ppl just gettin off their azzez & gettin (essentially) a Sun Pass???? #######? I say!

... an exorbitant fee.

The fee is hardly exhorbitant, considering the document is good for 10 years.

But one of the reason's most Americans don't have one is because of the fee. A drivers license or ID card is 1/5 that. And relatively speaking for a middle class (if there is such a thing anymore) American, the fee amounts to a power bill.

Yeah, whassat...50 bucks?

Terri, if they're regularly going to Canada, they can afford 50 bucks.

If not, they can wait til they save 50 bucks.

Oh for crying out loud!!!

You'd think that if you were a regular crosser of the Canadian border, it would be no trouble to get a $50 PassCard and easy enough to carry the dang thing round like your drivers licence.

If you're not a regular visitor, then get a passport like the rest of us have to do. The Brits need a passport to get into Europe, or even Eire.

I really fail to see what the big deal is.

I generally agree, though I do also think that it might hurt tourist/business trade.

Have they changed the rule for UK/Eire, though? I was last in Eire in 1991, and I didn't need to show a passport.

The initial mystery that attends any journey is: how did the traveller reach his starting point in the first place?

Wow...I had no idea that getting a passport was such a big deal in Canada. In America, you go to the post office with the application, your birth certificate, a picture ID, two pics for the passport and an exorbitant fee. Then in 4 to 8 weeks you have a passport. And it is good for 10 years...renewing it is simple too. I'm sorry it is so hard for you. Wonder what Mexico goes through?

Well Terri not that big a deal, just that I have moved and don't have anyone who can sign (only selected professionals) for me here where I live because they have to have known you for years.

And your passports are easy to get I am suprised for sure. US is cheaper than Canada's and like Agent Smith said US good for 10 years where out Canadian ones which I believe now are $87 and it is good for 5 years.

I think most Americans don't have one cos they don't travel internationally. Not cos of the fee.

If you need a passport, you're traveling internationally. If you're traveling internationally, then you can afford to do that & $100 isn't going to kill you.

If you can't afford $100...where the hell ya goin? lol

American passports are over a $100 now. Fees are $30 and $67 respectively and the pics cost about $15 more. Like I said for a middle class family that is an expensive luxury for most.

If a family considers the passport a luxury, well they can't afford the price of doing business, and should prolly not travel internationally.

If you're talking a nuclear family of 4, considering the kids are old enough to have to have one.. the price mounts up pretty high...

Terri, pics are like 15 here as well. Keeping in mind ours is 87 but only good for 5 years yours is for 10 years.

And I agree with LisaD the reason most American's dont have a passport is due to the fact that they don't travel internationally and you didn't need one to come to Canada until this year.

I also agree that it will hurt the tourist industry in the small close to the border towns in both Canada and the US, and it will impact kids in sporting events as well which is why they are up in arms over it. But in the mean time I will get mine and see if they can't come up with something else in the future.

I agree with Lisa. 97 bucks (that's the price according to state.gov) for a 10 year passport is not a lot. If you can't afford that, what kind of international travel do you plan to do anyway?

Oh, and 100 bucks is a middle class Americans power bill? I am a middle class American and I haven't seen a 100 dollar power bill in years.
