How 'official' does a translator need to be to translate my wife's birth certificate? At the Embassy we were told that basically anyone can translate it as long as they sign a letter 'certifying' that they are fluent in both languages and 'competent' to translate into English. We're here in the States applying for AOS.

Try going to a notary that speaks both English and the language the document is in. After it;s translated, they'll write something like "I So-in-So, Notary Public, am fluent in English and Other Lang. and have translated this document to the best of my ability and knowledge" and then they'll notarize everything. I think that's what they mean by "certified."

Just do it yourself. I did for my wife's birth certificate ...never had a problem.

I think it depends on the Embassy. Back home in Indonesia, they gave me a list of their appointed translators and told me to go there.

Hey there! i just called USCIS with the same question! they told me that you do NOT need to have it notarized and that you may translate it yourself as long as you explain you are fluent in the language. when my fiance and I originally filed the 129F we had to sent a copy of his birth certificate because he had a name chage on it. we started the translation like this:

To the best of my knowledge the translation of this document is... then he translated. after that he wrote something like I am ceritfied to translate this document from speaking English fluently for XX years. he then went and explained what age he was taught, for how many years he was taught and that he was living in the US for two more years. we got approved the first time and had no problems. we were just going to do this for our AOS as well. I think you will be fine! GOOD LUCK!
