I just got a call for an interview for what could eventually be my dream career.

I just quit my job after seeing Nevada have the balls to do it. I was incredibly unhappy. I am scheduled for a second interview to work for the state government at a state university in transportation. I used to work for the government in Canada doing something similar.

I am a HUGE football fan. (ie. soccer) My dads from Glasgow and I played competitively until I was 18. My dad played semi-pro once he got to Canada. My brothers played. I lived in England for a few years when I was a kid and its just a part of who I am. Well I just got an interview with the New York Red Bulls in the MLS. I would be doing a lot of cool stuff like looking after VIPs and running the stadium pub on game days. I would be the Assistant to the Managing Director of the organization. This could be the start of a career for me that I've always dreamed of. The interview for the state job and for this job fall on the same day.

Here's my question...Say you get offered two jobs...and one is a little bit more pay then the other but the one for less pay is something you really want to give a try and have always wanted to do. Do you turn down the state job for the possible dream job? Ah I'm excited and uneasy all at the same time.

(the state job with be my second interview, not my first for the position)

hehe hi Amanda!

Sure getting paid more is always a bonus but is it enough to keep you happy? Taking home a pay cheque is only part of what a job is all about. I think if you're doing something you have always wanted to do, that in itself is rewarding...more rewarding than greater pay.

eeeek! I know. It's always been my dream to work for a sports organization, especially the NHL. This would give me my foot in the door to apply for positions in the future I've always wanted to do.

dream job, I guess, but one has to thing about stability as well. I don't follow soccer, so I have no clue how the fan following is. But one has to think long term. Would you be happy at the State jobe? Better benefits? long term? promotions? Tough decision, best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

The dream job :-) as long as it paid a living wage and reasonable benefits:-). (Doesn't hurt to be practical as well as loving your job!). Good luck!

Dream job for sure. Going to work should be something you at least like and not just for the paycheque, the paycheque is good don't get me wrong but if you are in the position to go for your dream job and still be able to take care of yourself financially then why not. Whatever you decide to do please keep us updated, would love to hear how it all turns out.

2011 August 3 - Rec'd email that my case has been scheduled for Oath

2011 September 1 - Oath ceremony (rec'd snail mail Aug 5)

2011 September 1 - All done, yeah.

Agree with the above! If the difference in salary is less than about 25% or so, I would definitely go for the job that you are more interested in. Lots of people work their whole lives at something that they don't really want to be doing, so an opportunity like that seems possibly too good to pass up!

  • 12/2/08 -- NOA2 (WOOT!!!!)
  • 12/8/08 -- received at NVC
  • 12/22/08 -- packet 3 (with packet 4 attachment instead of checklist :P)
  • 12/29/08 -- packet 3 sent back with bits and pieces that I pulled together to make up a packet 3
  • 1/5/09 -- actual packet 3 received, but found out by via e-mail that they were satisfied with what I had already provided
  • 2/10/09 -- found out via call to DoS that my interview is scheduled!
  • 3/16/09 -- interview!!!! APROVED!!!
  • 4/7/09 -- MOVE!!!!!!!!
    Crossed at Detroit/Windsor Tunnel... pretty painless, about 45 minutes, inexperienced officer, asked for and received EA stamp
  • 4/13/09 -- Married in New Orleans!!!!!!!!
  • 5/30/09 -- Filed AOS/AP/EAD
  • 6/1/09 -- AOS etc received in Chicago

See but here is the deal.

If I work the state job, no matter where I go I will have the experience to work at another university or another position within a state. With a professional sports organization I would always have to live near a large city if I wanted to continue my career in that job field. I was just making plans with my husband to move to a small town. haha :(

guess one just has to sit down and list the positives and negatives of each job. not an easy decision. With the ever rising cost of gas, groceries, etc, how much $$$ are people going to keep paying for entertainment (soccor) So in the long run, maybe there isn't as much stability in a professional soccor league. Of course I know very little about soccor,lol
