The whole "pot as a gateway drug" thing got pretty much debunked by the New Scientist magazine about 10 years ago when they found that the Dutch had the lowest rates of heroin abuse in Western Europe, which was on the rise elsewhere.

Although it does stand to reason that most people who abuse hard drugs started off with soft drugs, simply trying soft drugs does not necessarily lead to hard drugs.

and no one has said that they did ...

there was discussion about whether marijuana led to hard drugs, yes?

yes kind of.. but no one said that smoking weed leads to hard drugs... I just pointed out that someone with addictive tendencies might try weed and that might lead to harder drugs.. and yes I know that person might become an addict anyways but I think that weed is probably more readily available then heroin or whatever... I can't really see a suburban kid going hey I think I want to try some heroin today ... they usually start off with weed..

Yes, and on the same token violent criminals probably start off shoplifting or some other petty crime, but a lot of people I know who knicked candy bars from their local shop turned into violent criminals.

Marijuana itself is actually less addictive than alcohol and tobacco.

I guess there are some really responsible people who only smoke weed? I know they must exist since we hear about them.

It's because they don't stand out as "druggies". You probably know several of these people.

I don't know if they would be considered "responsible" but Carl Sagan (astronomer & astrochemist), Margaret Mead (anthropologist), Newt Gingrich (politician), etc etc. are all names most people would consider "successful", albeit pot smokers. (just to name a few).

Yes, a lot of people I know do smoke pot. Many are hard working, high paid professionals who have smoked recreationally for most of their lives .... oh and who do not partake in other drugs... or smoking cigs ... or getting stupidly drunk btw. ;)

I also know a lot of people who probably should take a couple hits now and then! :P

The "Gateway" idea is a bit suspect. If we were to follow that rationale the argument would have to be applied to all things addictive - like cigarettes and alcohol, both of which are a lot more addictive.

I suspect the "Gateway" idea has something to do with the way these things are categorised. Weed has been classified as an illicit substance, therefore it can only lead to the consumption of other illicit substances, rather than other addictive substances that are legal. I would contend that a person with an addictive mindset for that kind of thing is going to find their own way into that particular world, and that surely there's no reason to suppose that weed would automatically factor into their decision..
