I just checked. Me and the kids (one 2yo and one baby) could travel from Houston to Leipzig Germany for about 1300 Dollars but that would be next year in May/June. Actually not that bad but I doubt that I can survive a 2year old AND a 9 months old together on an international flight.

I'm sure you will survive. It's the other passengers that I'm worried about. :innocent:

See, I don't care about those AT ALL. My son threw his pacies and blankies at the poor guy next to me on the flight from Germany to Houston but...what can I do. Can't really explain a one year old to behave and sit still for so long. I'm more worried about my sanity but I guess once the doors on the plane are closed I'll get through it somehow and so will everybody else. Don't you love moms with infants in an airplane????

I HATE them with a passion. There's nothing worse than having to sit next to a crying baby on a plane.

Drug the #### out of them, is that too much to ask?

NOPE, and I do that because I know there's people like you. You take the drugs, I let my kids scream. My son didn't cry on the way back to Houston but he threw stuff around.

How considerate of you.

I know...thanks

I bought my ticket this Monday. It was 1075 bucks. A week before I was told it's 880 bucks. Seriously. Prices went up 200 bucks in A WEEK. I have no idea why. The woman in the agency was shocked as well.

Also, I was supposed to fly Dec 20th, but when I finally had the money to buy the ticket there were NO flights from Europe to America for Dec 19th, 20th or 21st so I had to choose between 18th and 22nd. I couldn't go before 20th because of my university... so I had to take 22nd.

Edit: My post was full of typos that hurt my eyes.

Both tickets were economy class, with some discount for being younger than 25. As for no flights, she didn't think all seats got sold (one seat in the range of 3 days 6 months before the trip can't be found?), she said it looks weird as if all flights were canceled in those 3 days.

I never flew to the US before but this looked really weird and it was certainly not expected. :(

the airlines allocate x-number of seats for the lower fare base ... x-number for the next ... and so on. when the lower fare base tickets are sold ... the ticket prices go to the next fare base (which is typically higher). this frequently happens with economy class tickets.

Ah, I see!

Thank you for the explanation. :)

Damn I wish I had the money to get the ticket one week earlier. :bonk:

P.S. I'll be flying to San Antonio, Texas. :D

Yeah, I didn't want to wait until two or three months before the trip to buy tickets. I can't imagine I still would have gotten a decent round trip long haul flight for $674 per person. Though 1075 is teh suck, you may have still made out OK in the larger scheme of things.

Eveline, SAS was a pretty good airline to fly with with small children. They had little books and toys to try and keep small children entertained, also bassinets and the bulkhead seating was OK. The flight attendants were nothing to complain about. Far, far, far superior to US Airways. I recommend them if you come across them in a search. I tried to look for them this time, but they wanted $1400 (?) per person. :crying:

Thank you Wacken. We took Lufthansa last time since they go all the way to Leipzig (two stops but always Lufthansa) and I thought they were very good. They tried their best to get us bassinett seats and we did for all the flights. The attendants were not as friendly as I wished but oh well...

Actually, I think you should be a bit more considerate of others. There are, on average, 200 people on that plane who I assure you do NOT want to listen to your baby crying for 9 hours. It is your duty to make sure that baby is consoled and looked after for the entire trip.

I don't mean by drugging, but by being prepared and doing your damnedest to make them be quiet. That means reading, playing with and amusing that child for the duration. It also means making sure your child doesn't throw stuff around. How? By taking those things away from them so they have nothing to throw. It's your JOB as a parent to do these things. ;)

The other people on the plane have bought tickets too and have the right to a quiet, uneventful flight.

If there was a drunken man sitting next to you, leering over you and talking to you the whole way, I'm sure you'd be the first to complain - especially if he started throwing things at you. Now, turn that around and imagine a screaming baby in your ear for 9 hours who also decides to throw things at you. Not fun. Especially on a night flight when EVERYONE is trying to get some sleep.

On my flight to the UK in June I had the luck (ha!) to be sitting across the aisle from a married couple. They had two toddlers, around the ages of 1 to 2. For 8 hours they didn't shut up, nor did the parents make any effort to settle them down to sleep.

Because of them, the first few days of my holiday were ruined due to extreme exhaustion.

But I suppose you wouldn't care about that either.

Just trying to get the perspective across from another point of view. ;)

@Mags: Believe me, I have been in airplanes with babies screaming. On the way to Germany, while my husband held a blanket over me so I could nurse my son to sleep, there was a little babygirl screaming her lungs out, her mother desperate to get her to take the bottle but she unfortunately wouldn't and kept crying, while my son was sound asleep after his nursing session. On the way back...well...it wasn't an overnight flight (I don't think an overnight flight is actually possible on that route...don't know) and so it was a little harder to keep him busy. I have mentioned before that he didn't cry and he threw his pacifiers at the guy next to me. I told him not to do it but how much of that does a 10 month old understand? I also caught some pacies midair so they wouldn't land on the guy. I apologized, he said it was no big deal. If I had taken the paci from my son, he would have probably cried. I don't know how many bags of prezels we ate to keep him quiet or how often I walked up and down the aisle so he was busy. Of course I don't sit in the last row and sleep while he's all the way up front screaming. Of course I know to keep my son quiet and not let him scream or cry but there's a point when it is IMPOSSIBLE to keep him quiet or even from jibberjabbing or 'woofing' all loud. There were other babies who were much louder or some two year olds who repeated the same scentence over and over again. I just cannot stand people that roll their eyes as soon as they see kids or don't even want to be anywhere near them. It is hard to keep a baby from crying since they don't know how to pop their ears or they get bored easily. It's not fun for the parents. I was close to tears cause he just wouldn't hold still and I was sweating like a pig from all the walking around with him. I feel sorry for that guy next to me but I will not wait to visit my family just because I have a child. Parents with little kids have the right to travel just like everybody else, just my two cents...

When my husband was with me (on the way there, overnight flight) he basically slept about 8 hours but on the way back I was alone with him and it was tougher cause you can't have anybody else watch him. It wasn't easy but we made it and I will do it agian.

Just rent a private plane so you don't annoy people. I want to shoot parents who let their kids scream and throw a tantrum. They ruin the flight for everyone.

Three time's a charm...he did not scream neither did he throw a tantrum. He was 'talking' (meaning oooohs and aaaaaahhhs and he yawned a little louder every now and then) but so were all the other people around me. What is your problem?
