Yesterday, the House and the Senate worked out final legislation that “will remove from U.S. databases any notation characterizing the ANC and its leaders — including Nobel Laureate and former South African President Nelson Mandela — as terrorists.” Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has voiced support lifting the restrictions — even though the State Department has repeatedly opposed the bill — and it now heads to President Bush for his signature.

.....

…he was once considered by the American government to be affiliated with a terrorist organization.

According to this source, the bill was drafted more than five years ago but was adamantly opposed by State and the Republican-controlled Congress. Lawyers at the State Department “fought it tooth and nail,” arguing that if the A.N.C. was removed from the list then other groups would want to be removed, too, the staffer said.

Clearly demonstrating that anyone who disagrees with them or even appears to disagree with them is automatically labeled a terrorist.

Its about time.

But why did it take an act of Congress, since these are usually administrative matters? Maybe, in his heart, President Bush wants apartheid in South Africa?
