A jerk working at the consulate

I went to the US consulate in St Petersburg to ask questions about my options for filing and had to talk to biggest jerk I'd ever come accross. The whole time I felt hurried. He did not want to answer any questions at all and only did so begrudgingly. But he would never let me finish my question before he jumped to the wrong conclusion and would give a negative response. He even told me that they can prevent anybody from using a joint-sponser if they feel like it. Has anyone heard of that?

I had more questions about the availability of a visa for my wife but he walked out and refused to hear them. He also had the sanction from someone who appeared to be his supervisor, so there was not much I could do. They told me that the sort of questions that I was asking were the kind of questions that would only be answered after I had paid and filed a form. But I can't file a form until I know it's restrictions. He treated me like someone who was trying to immigrate himself whom they despised or they thought I was trying to do something illegal. Through the whole process i was very polite, perhaps that was my mistake. I asked some other people about him after I left (St Petersburg is not that big) and they said it sounded like the same guy that was a jerk to them too. It's rather odd because the Russian woman that I usually talk to at the consulate is always polite and helpful while American dudes are the jerks. So, how am I supposed to get information in order the make a decision here, if the consulate won't tell me anything? Hire a lawer? I'm so pissed about it I am thinking about not returning to the USA. Are these kind of people representing America?

If you have the opportunity to get to Moscow go to the US embassy there. I did the same as you several years ago, but at the embassy and they were very helpful and answered all my questions. You can also e-mail the embassy and they tend to do a good job of responding. Also check their website. Don't forget one of your best sources of information.....Visajourney, especially the Russia forum.

Sorry you got stuck talking to a jerk. Remember, there are people like that all over the world.

And remember that the visa work and interview will be in the US and Moscow, not St Petersburg.

You could try emailing your questions and/or asking them here.

Welcome to Russia. It seems that a lot of jerks get posted at the US embassy in Russia. :( Don't expect Moscow to be any different, we've run into super-jerks there. The best thing to do is get all the information you can from VJ, the State Dept, and USCIS websites. NEVER argue with the people at the US Consulates. They have all sorts of powers to delay and cause trouble for your applications. I've had many friends threatened with blacklisting for asking a simple question in a normal tone of voice. And many times the result of your visa interview has been decided before you get there. So read everything you can then ask your questions here.

Well, I have just emailed the embassy in Moscow. I hope they will actually address the question this time. Sometimes it seems they forget to answer the actual question I ask, or only answer one question if I ask several.
