Canadian Employment Income

Has anyone applied and collected Canadian Employment Income after moving to the US? I know that you can quit your job and collect it for reason of getting married and moving to a different city within Canada (friend of mine did and collected EI), but am not sure if that applies to also moving out of the country.

Thank you so much, your help is very appreciated. I was so confused with the whole thing and you helped a lot with the link you enclosed. Still a bit confused about the fact if I can collect it prior to having employment authorization, but will read through again carefully and try to make more sense out of it.

Yeppers, Its not a free benefit, one pays into it on every paycheque!! I too found it very interesting that one could collect it while in the USA. Quitting ones job to move to be with a spouse is an acceptable reason to apply. The amount you get is based on your Cdn income, The max one can get is around $1240 a month (after taxes) the Cdn Governemnt will take off 25% for taxes. And when it comes time to report your IRS taxes, youo have to report the EI payments as well. And there are ways to get some of the paid income tax back!! Lots of reading!! I think I qualify for the maximum. When I called EI office, they said that you have to be making $700 or more per week to qualify for the maximum of $413 per week before taxes, which is all right. I am getting ready to quit my job and leave Calgary to move to CA in about a month and a half, and since I've been so independent for a long time and I don't know how long it's gonna take to get Empl. authorization, this will really help me feel better about not working.

Since you have so much knowledge about this stuff, would you recommend applying for EA right away, or together with AOS application, once we are married. ( I have K-1 visa)? Thanks.

I have no clue with regards to to the k1 visa as I was a cr-1 and was able to work right off the bat. I know a few others that did k1 and got EI. Just look through the EI section and PM a k1'er and ask away! Plus if you go back in this Canadian forum, I believe there my be other EI topics. Best of luck

Wow.. that's wonderful protection. We have unemployment benefits here as well but you have to run through loopholes to get it... And they do consider your pay and the amount of time that you spent at your job... Also I think you only get a percent of what you earned, about %60...

Pretty much the same with EI. One has to work so long to get it. Not everyyone gets the maximum amount. Not everyone can get EI, if you quit your job, and its not a valid reason, one may get denied!! I was actually denied at first (military-, broke my contract to get out, blah blah) but appealed and won. As well while getting EI, one hads to be actively looking for work, if not and they find out, they may withdraw your payments!!
