 If you're lucky the sky in Los Angeles is blue 3 days out of 7.

Other days you can open your door and take in a big lungful of brown haze.

You lived somewhere hellish in the Inland Empire though, didn't you?

It's always sunny on the westside (except when there's fog)

Actually no - we lived in one of the cities around the foothills. East of Pasadena.

The smog tends to settle in the valleys and you can have bad days where you can barely see the mountains. Its pretty terrible when its like that - jogging up that way was hellish, like I couldn't get enough air in my lungs. About what I'd imagine an Asthma attack would feel like, if I had Athsma that is...

It was pretty brutal in the middle of the city too - you have the smog all over, but the heat island effect can be really oppressive.

What city? Pasadena or downtown?

Well, the situation near the foothills and downtown can be bad. I can see the mountains (the Santa Monicas, not always the San Gabriels) most days so I don't think it's so bad this side of the city. In fact, I jog and bike every day and never had problems.

Although LA has the worst air quality in the country, I wonder how much worse it appears because of the geography of the area - the air quality in London is almsot as bad, but you only really notice it when you fly out on an airplane.

Probably true - you don't get much of a breeze inland so the smog tends to sit there.

Air quality is also the reason I don't do the subway in NYC (or London) if I can possibly avoid it. Blowing that black ####### out of your nose at the end of the day really is disgusting.

Yeah, a quick look here shows bad air anywhere inland.

I do find the drive through that area on the way to Vegas or Palm Springs depressing - you can really see the effect all our car driving has air quality, which would be true of any area with a high density population.

You really notice the difference when you're heading into LA from that direction. You can see the smog from miles away.
