I´m wating for the arrival of the DS 230 I & II appl. for my husband in Brazil. I have searched online to see the documents required to be sent with that Appl. I know that all documents must be in English and that it needs to be Orginal documents or certified copies. My question is...I will send the Orginal Docs. which is in Portuguese and the translated ones in English. Can it be a copy of the translations or does it have to the orginal translation?????

Do you understand what I mean????

Please help me out. Thank you..

Hi Gisele,

You don't need any translations for the documents as long as they are either in portuguese or in english, they don't need any translations, that's what the guides say, so don't worry about that.

Regarding orginals, you need originals or certified copies issued by the issuing authority, not by public notary (these are not accepted). In Brazil, for birth and marriage certificates the issuing authorities can provide you with a so called "second via" of orginal, which is considered an original document.

Hope it helps!

I just took a look at the guides and it says documents not in english or in the language of the country where the application for visa is being made (Brazil = Portuguese) need to be translated. Therefore, if you had documents in Spanish or Arabic they would need to be translated, but the consulate is equipped to handle English and Portuguese.

I read on this website http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/in...ml#certificates and it says that all documents not in english MUST be translated. What i want to know is does can the translation be a copy or does it have to be the orginal

Missingbrazil got it right! Gisele, I think you're misunderstanding what you've read, so you really don't need any translations! I'm from Brazil and did not submit the documents to any translations and never had an RFE, neither had anyone else who sent documents in english or in the language of the country in which application for a visa is being made.

"Translations

All documents not in English, or in the official language of the country in which application for a visa is being made, must be accompanied by certified translations. "

The way that this sentece was constructed may have caused some confusion among VJers but you are asking for the proper information and we know for sure that it says that you don't need the translations. It would only be necessary if your husband from Brazil would get documents in other languages rather than in portuguese or english. That's the message on that sentence.
