Gary, set aside Global Warming for a minute. We are seeing mercury levels in the oceans increasing, plant and animal species disappearing, bodies of water where nothing can live - all direct results from human activity. We cannot just ignore the cause and effect with regard to our environment...we must change the way we have been doing things, find less destructive and polluting ways. We are stewards of the planet and have a responsibility to take care of it, not disregard it for our own short term gains.

Web consequences of our actions. Its as simple as that.

Sure, no argument from me at all. Never has been. I would love to see us pollute the planet less. In fact if we could get over this GW hysteria we could spend that money and energy towards real progress along those areas. The diversion of money and attention that GW has caused has hurt our efforts in the real battles IMO.

That was an interesting article, too. Explains a warm anomaly in surface sea temperatures during the 1940s as an artifact of the war. Turns out that during the war, the British got chased off the oceans and stopped making temperature measurements while they were out there. The US continued, but their measurements were biased high because of their method. (The Brits were biased low. It isn't hard to correct for the bias, once you detect it and understand it.) Just what the implication will turn out to be for the temperature record isn't completely understood, but a puzzling anomaly at mid-century is now solved. It'll probably turn out that 20th century warming was slightly stronger than previously believed. It probably also strengths the case for anthropogenic climate forcing as the cause of observed warming.

I had kept an eye out, wondering if news of it would appear here.
