A 12-year-old girl was stabbed by her older brother's 18-year-old girlfriend on Wednesday after the girlfriend became upset about disparaging comments the girl had made about her on MySpace, police said.

Stephanie Torres of Dover stabbed the 12-year-old girl three times with a pocket knife that was about an inch to an inch and a half long and was attached to a keychain, said town police Capt. Robert Kerwick.

The victim suffered stab wounds to her neck, left arm and left rib during the assault, Kerwick said.

The stabbing took place at around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday in an apartment at 39 W. Fairview Ave. where both Torres and the victim live.

The victim rushed out of her apartment after the attack and ran down the block to a friend's apartment at 51 W. Fairview Ave., where police were called. From there, she was taken by ambulance to St. Clare's Hospital/Dover, where she was treated and released on Wednesday afternoon.

After the girl told police that Torres was her attacker, police began searching for the 18-year-old and put out a description of her vehicle.

Torres was arrested after police spotted her driving her vehicle on Route 46 near St. Clare's at around 1:25 p.m. Wednesday. Kerwick said police believe that Torres was just driving through the neighborhood and did not intend to go into the hospital.

Torres had the knife used in the stabbing when she was arrested, Kerwick said.

Kerwick said Torres was upset about disparaging comments that the 12-year-old had made about her during "communications over the computer." He said he did not know whether the comments were made in an e-mail or on an Internet Web site forum, and said he did not know what the comments were about.

"Whatever she (the 12-year-old) was doing made this (18-year-old) girl mad," Kerwick said.

Witnesses said the girl was bleeding profusely when she fled her apartment.

"She was bleeding too much," said Celina Suarez, who lives in an apartment next door to the victim's friend. Suarez called police after she heard the victim's cries for help.

Torres was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Randolph Municipal Judge Ira Cohen set bail for Torres at $75,000.

Kerwick said Torres had attended Dover High School and had two prior arrests for assault as a juvenile, including one arrest for an alleged assault against a school employee. The disposition of those cases was not immediately available.
