So a law cannot restrict anyone from carrying a gun anywhere? Schools? Courtrooms? Offices?

Incorrect. See post #10 for an excerpt from the actual ruling addressing your question.

It's a great victory for our constitutional rights.

"Undoubtedly some think that the Second Amendment is outmoded in a society

where our standing army is the pride of our nation, where well-trained police

forces provide personal security and where gun violence is a serious problem,"

Scalia wrote. "That is perhaps debatable, but what is not debatable is that it is

not the role of this court to pronounce the Second Amendment extinct."

Agreed, I liked that part too.

People opposed to the right to bear arms should come out in the open and admit what they're really after is a repeal of the 2nd Amendment. Maybe there is enough support for that, maybe there isn't. We won't know until the issue is "out there" in the open.

Barack Obama:

I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures. The Supreme Court has now endorsed that view, and while it ruled that the D.C. gun ban went too far, Justice Scalia himself acknowledged that this right is not absolute and subject to reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe. Today's ruling, the first clear statement on this issue in 127 years, will provide much-needed guidance to local jurisdictions across the country.

John McCain:

Today's decision is a landmark victory for Second Amendment freedom in the United States. For this first time in the history of our Republic, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was and is an individual right as intended by our Founding Fathers. I applaud this decision as well as the overturning of the District of Columbia's ban on handguns and limitations on the ability to use firearms for self-defense.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

What does this mean for D.C.?

My guess is that you can legally own and keep a firearm in your home, but D.C. will be able to restrict carrying one on your possession in public areas.

And they can continue to require that all guns be registered/licensed and they can continue to not issue licenses to felons and the mentally ill....

Mental illness be damned, I want a gun!

Please read the excerpts already posted in this thread. The justices have clearly said those kinds of restrictions (felons, mentally ill, etc.) are acceptable.

I saw many a western where the good sherif ;) confiscated all the firearms at the town boundary to prevent gun fights. I guess these ol' sherif's overstepped their mark :bonk:

The problem with the quote is that although it is up to the legislative branch to amend the Constitution where necessary, it is the SC's job to interpret it. The SC could have interpreted that the 2nd Amendment applied only to militias back in the late 1700s opposing a monarchy's reign and no longer is applicable.

If it is not the job of the SC to interpret the law, what is its job?
