We have two children who came to the US as K2's, and they are under the age of 14. For my wife we have to file form I-131 with the 485 in order for her to get AP.

My question is...

Is it necessary to file the 131 for the two K2's for them to travel outside and return to the US?

If you have done this please let us know.

Yes, if the children need to travel outside the US before AOS is complete, they'll need Advance Parole.

Each alien requires there own complete set of applications... Kids do not get to ride the parental coat tail ....

YMMV

The instructions would indicate the following:

If you filed a Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, on or after July 30, 2007, and you paid the I-485 application fee required, then no fee is required to file a request for Advance Parole or for a Refugee Travel Document on Form I-131.

YMMV
