Well, I want your opinions and experiences about your SO and the issue of having/wanting a dog.

I have always wanted a dog. I know the responsibility is a big one so I have never taken the subject of owning a dog lightly. I also never liked big dogs that shed and drool (just for those reasons, otherwise I like them). So for me, I would prefer something like a Lhasa Apso or #######-a-poo. They don't shed as much or drool.

I live across from a dog park and see the owners with their dogs everyday. Abbas is enjoying going there and watching. When I said I wanted a dog, he said, "NO WAY" because of his religion.

So, is it haram or not?

not sure on that viewpoint for them, i know most arent apparently raised with or know many animals. Some have accepted other i think havent, would it stay inside our outside, maybe tht is the point to not be clean inside. Ahmed already knows i have a cat and a dog we will just all live under the same roof and he often asks how they are...maybe its just the not being familiar with the pet life

I tend to agree with Brni on this subject. I also think it is up to the individual, just like it is here.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

My husband does not believe it is haram, but if we had them, he'd want them to live outside, if they were large anyway, to keep the house clean. He did tell me one should wash a dish seven times after a dog eats from it, but I don't know the reference for that. He's far more permissive with the kittehs than I expected, pretty much lets them have free rein and coddles them like babies. And they love him more. :(

I agree that it may be more cultural than religious, or at least may have more to do with personality, personal preference, or what he's used to. Animal people seem to be animal people regardless of culture or religion.

technically its not ok to have a dog unless its for protection and even then its a tender subject.

The main reason hubby didn't want our dog was coz if any part of the dog touched him , he would be considered "unclean" and unable to pray until he took a shower. It is more hassle than its worth in respect to prayer.

Same goes for if I touched the dog and then touched him with the same hand I touched the dog with, it would make him unclean and he'd have to shower in order to pray.

The reason its so unclear to a lot of ppl is coz in the Qura'an the dog was in the cave with the men. There has been and always will be a controversy over wether its ok or not to have a dog in the house....

hope this helps

My husband has no problem w/ it, in fact, he loves our dogs. They are not allowed on the sofa or in the bed (they used to be before he got here) and have been broken of that habit. We also have a room where they are not allowed so it can be kept "dog-free" for prayer.

This blog entry might shed a little light on the old traditions that dogs are haram.

http://fromcairo.blogspot.com/2005/05/dogs-in-islam.html

The hadith about angels not entering into your home if there is a dog is really misunderstood (IMO)

I don't know about you but I plan to live in my Mansion in California with my Husband and lots of little white dogs! I'm really excited for that day to come! In the meantime we've had this discussion before and it is not haram. They are just not used to dogs and cats as take home pets.

I think it is culture; my Grandparents use to feel that dogs need to be outside, but they are from an old culture. My mother born here, loved her dogs, and I had a little dog, and my husband always ask for Gus the damn dog. Lol In the old days people used to think that animals in the home represented poor hygiene and filth. Of course remember these are the days when people never thought to take their animals to a veterinary, I am not sure they even had them in parts of the world. The majority of people that feel that way come from a third world country where just feeding yourself is a task in itself, not even thinking of feeding animals. Now we are in a country where we care for our animals and they are healthy and well fed and most time very clean. That thinking is just old fashion, we do better, when we know better.

hello

i know ist sensitive question, but we know all that islam forbid living with dog at home, only if u have farm and u need dog to watch..

MOhamed MABUH said taht ANGEes dont ENter A shouse there is dog on it or photo

there are many Prophetic hadiths that warn Muslims about getting into contact with dogs. In fact, some of these hadiths give warnings that going against this rule takes away a sizeable amount of reward from a person’s record (of good deeds) daily. Adding to that is the Prophet’s order for killing the dogs in Medina and the Angel Gabriel’s refusal to enter the Prophet’s house in one of his visits, citing the presence of dog as reason.

But alongside with this, are many hadiths that call for showing kindness to animals in general, including dogs, and the permissibility of keeping dogs for hunting, guarding, etc. It’s further reported that some of the Prophet’s companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, were in the habit of keeping animals for farming purposes or even for fun and pleasure

So to clarify this confusion, we need to interpret those hadiths in the light of the Qur’an. The Qur'an makes it clear that there is no harm in eating animals grabbed by hunting dogs. Furthermore, it’s through the Qur'an that we get acquainted with the story of the Cave Companions (ahl-ul-khaf) who had with them their dog; this clearly shows that dogs have historically been used for guarding the person and the property of its owners

This also indicates that dogs must be treated well they are of the animals referred to in the verse:

There is not an animal (that lives) on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but (forms part of) communities like you.

Surah 6 Verse 38

The implicit message of this verse is that in Islam, the concept of mercy covers humans as well as animals, for Islam accords animals inviolable rights, part of which is to be fed well and not to be subject to torture or ill-treatment. Hence, I recall here the hadith in which the Prophet (pbuh), stated that a woman was doomed to enter Hell because of a cat...

‘which she neither fed nor let it eat from the vermin of the earth.’

Maybe i'm imagining things, but when we were in Essaouira in Al Maghreb, it seemed like cats were very well loved and appreciated by the local folks. I've seen cats wander into hotel restaurants at breakfast in Casablanca and no one even looked twice. When I've seen that happen in other places, people panic, throw shoes, yell obscenities, etc.

My question is, do Moroccans along the coast or any other specific groups in Al Maghreb have any special cultural feelings towards cats? It seemed that way. I never saw people shooing away cats or being to them like i have in other places, and it was very nice.

I can't speak for all Moroccans, but I know my husband's family had cats in the home while he was growing up.
