I filled out Form NR73 before I left Canada, and then informed the "International Tax Service Office" when I did my last income tax return that I was leaving Canada to live in the U.S.

I cancelled my Medical Services Plan coverage (B.C.) for the last day I was going to be in Canada.

I contacted both ITSO and MSP more than a month before I left Canada.

(Quote function doesn't work for me.)

I know! Shocker, innit? Government actually gives you a refund! I think gov't cheques are good for six months so I'll wait till I return to Canada with AP later this year to deposit. I'm wondering if they will request the cheque's return due to "Issued in error." It's gov't, it's possible.

I also filled out the NR 73 from Revenue Canada and sent it in a couple of weeks after my USA arrival.

At least two weeks before departure, I contacted all my banks to let them know my non-residency effective date and to send all correspondence to my address in USA. I'm ####### and I do not stand for customer service incompetency so I called them all at least twice (each bank) to make sure they had my new address and to stop sending things to my Canadian address.

I can't stress how important it is to contact each organization/company AT LEAST TWICE and to speak with different people to make sure your info is changed. Too often I've been given wrong info and they screw up. Don't assume the person on the other line is as competent and efficient as they sound!
