there is a form one CAN (does not have to) fill out, I can't think of it off the top of my head, but Im sure Cassie will chirp in with its name,lol I didnt fill it out, and from a few other tax forums I visited in the past, they said dont bother filling it out, but Cassie's tax dude said it should be filled out. On your Canadian income tax, there is a spot on the front page that asks when you ceased to be a Cdn resident, and thats all I did. There is a place on the Canadian gov't webpage that you can register and place your new american address. To do that, one requires some information from your past Cdn income tax papers (asks for an $$ amount from a certain line #) Very easy process. http://www.canada.gc.ca/MGA-MDG/intro-eng.html Epass is the name!!

Thanks Flames!

So I don't need to notify anyone that I'm leaving?

maybe your family and friends :lol: ... just teasin...

not really....

just make sure and cancel your GST and any other tax credits you might be getting.. as they will want that money back if you are collecting it once you move to the US.....

Wouldn't that just end when I quit my job?

nope... maybe tax credits isn't the right word...

I mean like GST etc... they will continue to send it to you unless you cancel it...

when I filed my taxes I just didn't apply for the GST because I knew I would be moving soon...

hehe yeah I seem to be the poster child for this form :P

It's NR-73 and this is what the form says on the front page:

DETERMINATION OF RESIDENCY STATUS (LEAVING CANADA)

NR73 E (07) (Ce formulaire est disponible en français.)

Complete all areas of this form if you plan to leave or have left Canada, either permanently or temporarily. Give all the facts about your residency status

while living inside and outside Canada.

Mail only one completed copy of this form for the tax years in question (an additional form is not necessary for each tax year unless your situation changes,

or directed otherwise) to the International Tax Services Office, 2204 Walkley Road, Ottawa ON K1A 1A8. If you prefer, you can send the form by fax to

(613) 941-2505.

You can find most of our forms and publications, as well as information on taxes, programs and credits, on our Web site at www.cra.gc.ca.

I don't know why I seem to have been the only one required to fill this form out, but I did.

Laura, you may need to inform your province's health system about your intent to leave as well.

when I filed my taxes I just didn't apply for the GST because I knew I would be moving soon...

That's what I did too when I filed for my 2006 taxes, my accountant just didn't check the part for the GST so I didn't get any in 2007, so I didn't owe it.

It's NR-73 and this is what the form says on the front page:

DETERMINATION OF RESIDENCY STATUS (LEAVING CANADA)

Laura, you may need to inform your province's health system about your intent to leave as well.

Just a little note on that form, my accountant pointed it out to me when we filed for the 2007 taxes and here's what i found about it :

If you want an opinion about your residency status, complete and submit Form NR73, Determination of Residency Status (Leaving Canada).

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/nonresidents/.../leaving-e.html

To me that pretty much means it's only if you are unsure of your residency status, and it's only an OPINION from them. You know when you left Canada, you know when you received your GC, so you don't need it. I chose not to file it and I received my taxes return without any problem.

on the same page:

When do you become a non-resident?

When you leave Canada to settle in another country, you usually become a non-resident of Canada for income tax purposes on the latest of the following dates:

the date you leave Canada;

the date your spouse or common-law partner and dependents leave Canada;

the date you become a resident of the country to which you're immigrating.

It's important that you tell us the date you leave Canada because your residency status affects your eligibility to receive:

the GST/HST credit (goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax);

Canada Child Tax Benefit payments (and any similar provincial program payments);

Universal Child Care Benefit payments.

If you receive such credits or payments after you emigrate, contact us at once.

Hope it helps :)

As long as you don't receive any money or other benefits from the Cdn gov't that you are not entitled to, there is no problem. Even then, unless you update a gov't agency with your new address, no one will notice unless someone rats you out :P Even the different government agencies don't often communicate with each other on these things.

Even though I am pretty new to this fun game, if there are any get-togethers planned in Chicago, I would love to be included! I am normally there twice a month or so, so there is a pretty good chance I will be in town at that time.

Soooo, if I tell BC Revenue Services that I am no longer a resident of BC so I can stop paying my monthly MSP bill ($54 or something) for Healthcare, does that mean everyone else is gonna find out I am not a resident too? Because I really should give that up - I have technically been gone for more than 6 months (although it is fuzzy as I came as a visitor).

Juuuust wonderin'

I took money out of my RRSP under the First Time Homebuyers Plan too, and was told that when I become a non-resident for income tax purposes, I would have to stop paying that money back and instead be assessed income tax on the remaining balance, based on my income for the last year that I was a resident. Because said house is now a rented, I am going to have to claim that as income, which puts my income for the year pretty high considering I have done absolutely nothing to earn money so far. Which is going to mean a pretty big tax bill this year I think. Ugh.

Why can't I just disappear quietly into the night...:)

Yes, a filed tax return would be an address update, but not everyone is obligated to file one, and the original poster had indicated that this was probably not near the top of her list ;)

If your status in the US is only visitor, then technically you are still legally a resident of BC. If you want to cancel your provincial health plan you can, but then you don't have health insurance. Once you move with your visa permanently ot the US, you are required by law to cancel your provincal health plan.

There is legal precidence of the government of Canada suing Canadian ex-pats for not notifying them that they've left the country but kept ties in Canada, such as bank accounts, RRSPS, pensions etc etc...If you keep financial ties to the country, you could be required ot file annual tax returns, and if you don't, they *will* eventually come after you for back taxes if they think you owe them.

However, as to the original question of the thread, I've been a member on Connect2Canada for several years, it is not there for the government to spy on ex-pats, its there as a service to ex-pats to keep in touch with Canada, and other ex-pat Canadians in their area.

I've gone to Charlotte Checkers hockey game, and a Canada Day party last year with the Charlotte group. Even if they were having something this year for Canada Day, I wouldn't make it anyhow. Its too far, and the price of gas is too much these days. But it was nice those couple of times to hang out with other Canucks for a day.

I think it's best that you pay your BC MSP for the last month you will reside in BC. I left April 5, 2008 but I paid for the whole month of April (call them two weeks before departure to ensure they will stop pre-authorized payment from your bank acct, then call again a few days before departure just to make sure the person with whom you spoke the first time did exactly what you requested).

But oddly enough, three days ago I received a refund cheque of $54 to my address here in the USA for the month of April. I did not expect that because I figured since I was still in Canada for a few days in April, I should pay for the whole month.
