The software you are downloading should be fine without conflict. I would be more worried about anything you install conflicting with AOL <--- blah!

You got good advice here regarding the router but if it came with your service you may not be able to just upgrade it. Can you call your ISP and ask for their suggestions and perhaps request a replacement? Too much traffic on one computer using too many resources can really slow a connection down or even drop it. You have to remember that your computer isn't just running the things you see running or things that you started. There are all sorts of things running in the background that come on with system start up. Vista requires more resources as well.

Try hardwiring if nothing else.

thanks guys for your help.as its in dads name dunno if i can get away with phoning up the isp and talking to them. they may insist on talking to the name on the account. its a brand reuter and its diferent to the one they are giving out now. i'm sure it should be possible to upgrade i'll have a look. i know one friend did swap his that came with it back to his nice big better one.

while i'm on here i'm downloading ad aware 2008 free, is this gunna conflict with avast free version when i rebbot? or because ones antivirus and the other is spyware remover its ok?

Avast and AdAware should not conflict, as only one is an antivirus. Two antivirus programs, otoh, can conflict.

just as I thought... it is indeed a g router... it is giving "54 Mbps data rate with auto fallback Integrated antenna 64/128Bit WEP encryption"

very small strength... .. If at all possible.. look at increasing your router...

You dont have to get biggest power such as the N..

do a search on ebay.. maybe you can find someone that has one at a good price..

talk to your friend and see what work well for them...

I know here where I live.. the routers are labled via letters... g now to a N. and even then.. if the pc.. is not speed capable.. or my net connection not fast enough.. it is simply wasted speed.. but still anything higher than a G is going to be a improvement

Technically, the G and the N router used different data compression algorithm. They do run on the same bandwidth of 2.4ghz. The problem is the delay in packets (data) that one computer keeps getting kicked off. Another reason is maybe the household is using a 2.4ghz analog phone that causes destruction interference in the radio waves resulting in disconnection. If that is the case, get a digital 2.4ghz wireless phone that has digital spread spectrum (DSS), or the ones that says wi-fi compatible.

There is so much I can do over the forums versus being present to troubleshoot the problem.

me too a few months ago just wanted to make sure i wasn't doing it again, the program looked different to when i last had it.

we dont have analogue phones we have digital wireless. and the cable is plugged into the white thing the instructions told us to.

thanks guys for your help. now i know i was wrong  and it was my fault  i might see if i can get another one thats better but i could do with not spending any money right now. looking on the aol website they seem to only support certain ones. so i dont know what i'll do.

get this went to send an email to them last night to ask what you have to do and they disconnected the internet for ages. so i couldn't email.

not the first time they did that either. stupid thing.
