sorry guys, but I know i saw some of you state you were in the business and knew some things bout these, could someone help resolve this? :innocent:

ok heres the situation. one house one wireless reuter, a desk top comp upstairs (furthest comp from reuter) and a laptop in the same room as reuter in a separate corner so shouldnt be too close don't think thats the problem.

heres the problem, if the person on the desk top is using the internet and looking at lets say four pages on the net and using skype to voice and video chat.

is it that persons fault that the person on the laptop gets repeatedly knocked off the net? is this possible? is it also possible for them to hear when the person on the desktop clicks on things through the laptop? the only downloading is what ever is happening when video calling and an internet page loading.

the signal from the reuter to the desktop is rubbish and frequently it says it doesn't exist stupid thing :angry:well thats what the desktop gets . but i have trouble believing that it would knock a computer completely off, slow the net yes but completely off?

I have wireless router, and several computers using broad band at the same time, even with Skype communicating on one PC there is no dropping wireless to the others.

Sounds like you may have either a bad wireless router, or bad wireless card in the laptop, does the laptop operate fine at other wireless hotspots?

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

dont get me started on my mothers laptop. when they got it at first you would be using it turn its self off for no reason. i am unaware of whether they have used it else where on the net. i don't touch it cos if domething happened it would be my fault. its an acer and its vista, was a bought pakage factory built from the shop where i had mine custom bult. i'm in two minds as to whether or not its the reuter (stupid tiny thing from aol ) or the laptop.

i suspect the reuter cos i will using the net on mine and sudenly there is not signal, and wireless dongle refuses to find it.

but then i suspect the laptop cos its been such an pain the the perveb since they got it.

but why does the other person think they can hear everytime i click from one page to another over the net? thats what they think is knocking them off

thanks yuanddan for answering my plea for help

Possibilities

1. Bad router, or poor quality one.

2. Bad wireless card

3. Interference from other sources, if you live in apartment or tightly packed neighborhood, other wireless routers.

You can narrow down the possibilities by connecting the laptop, via Ethernet cable directly to the router. If the problem goes away, its an issue with the signal or hardware creating it.

I agree.. first I would do is look at the router that you are using.. what type is it?

I had one router and it was junk.. I went down to Bestbuy bought a Netgear RangeMax dual Band N router.

If you are operating with a Wireless-G.. it is very basic. coverage area 1X speed is 1x with three free channels. simply allows net surfing with email and chat.

Personally if you are operating your pc.. and another person is using.. and both are operating. net.. and possibly one is using Skype...

the router definaetly needs to be upgraded..

If your router is basic G router.. the power is not strong enough.. and is apt to get interference.

I went with a N router.. has between 2.4 GHz and 5GHz up to 25 free channels. this stronger power avoids interference that can be caused by...

WI-FI, Cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, Microwave oven, Baby monitors.

Wireless router comparison

best of luck

it was the free one that came with aol. we are in the uk. i think its the basicpakage i'm not sure what the reuter is and specifics. does that make a difference? are we talking about the reuter or the wireless card in the laptop. cos that was built in and we havent touched that

Depends on the router, I suppose. The desktop and the laptop are sharing

the same physical connection, so it's possible for one computer to eat up all

the bandwidth to a point where the other computer's connections start timing out.

Most home wi-fi routers don't have any sort of bandwidth shaping or throttling

capability, so one user downloading a huge video file can drag the whole

network down to its knees.

As for hearing "when the person on the desktop clicks on things", that depends

on what you click on. Clicking in and of itself doesn't send any traffic through

the network, but if you click on a link to download a 700MB file while the other

person is in a video conference call, they might very well notice. ;)

To answer the question, it depends.

If one of the two computers is doing some serious multimedia, there will more data moving in the limited bandwidth (traffic) for the other to use. Simply, if you have a road with thousands of trucks, and you are the only car, would it take you a longer time to get to your final destination? The browser software will timeout if the content of the web page takes too long to load. It doesn't necessary mean that you are always getting kicked off. I would recommend getting a CISCO router (ex. Linksys).

I would suggest getting a software that limits the bandwidth, upload and download streams, to a set rate that you can customize for each machines. This way it will allow for equal access, or data transfer amongst the two computers.

thanks for your reply but  i'm confussed. to be specific. i had skype running and using it to chat to the other half. i then had firefox with about four or so tabs open and was just reading the pages. so facebook, visa journey igors list and the uscis site or myspace can remeber, but wasnt uploading anything other than refeshing a page or two. and the video call. in fact the clicking i was being acussed of was clicking on the tabs to bring them forward. would this really have knocked him off ebay?

Hannah+Vito.. that is still alot of pages open .. each page you open takes space.. uses info..

I still believe that .. the router is the problem..

It sounds like the BASIC.. router you are saying you got with AOL... ..is quite possibly simple .maybe a Wireless-G.

That is not strong enough for all you are talking of.. especially if you have that going on . .the webpages... then talking.. .. then other pc goes on to ebay.. .. pictures.. and page loading.. takes alot..

Take a look at the machine that AOL gave you the wireless router.. what does it say..

You really may need to invest in something a bit stronger......

I used to have a basic.. G router... had one pc.. main one.. connected.. then used the pc in bedroom.. via usb ..when I got my laptop ... It would take forever to load anything.. and .. kept clicking offline... couldnt get much loaded...

once I changed my router... which I decided to go strongest at the time.. to a RaneMax Dual Band Wireless -N... never had so much as a blink..

My daughter can pick it up in her room.. run that while downloading pictures.. or videos.. etc.. .. all while I am on laptop doing VJ or other sites..

I also can be watching online movies at the same time .. never even a blink.. before that.. took heck of alot of attempts..

hope that helps at all

Do you have a cordless telephone plugged into the landline sockets somewhere?

the phone is plugged into the white thing they told us to plug into when we got the reuter. i think you are right the reuter sucks big time. if i could afford it i would have replaced it a long time ago behind his back, but hey. c'est la vie.
