They are not evil,

but the system is slow and rotten... rotten and slow.

They do bad things (like long waiting and mistakes), but that's because the system is inefficient, not because people are evil. You pay for USCIS mistakes and none of them care to correct mistakes quickly or apologize... they normally just don't know what happened and how... Do they ever battle rules to protect your interests? Nah... they just work to earn their keep. Can you blame them? No. Can you appraise them for the work they do? Hell, no!

Rika

I'll tell you what, anytime I called USCIS, they were always nice and helpful to me.

Thinkin of them as 'the big bad evil' isn't really accurate. But it does give the couple a 'common enemy' to join forces against. Once that influence is over, for some, it seems to spoil the romanticism of it all....

USCIS only pretends to work!

If they had contractor working on applications approval times would be 10 time shorter, but government employees work slower than paint dries.

Here is my story. I've lived problem free life, payed my taxes. One day I decided to marry this girl. But to do so would require her to come to US of A, and so it started. My problem free live turned in to free problems from USCIS! Sure things turned to unsure, certain dates turned to aproximation within months. All logical thinking was out the door, as I filed my papers withing famous Vermont Centre!

they have contractors working on the USCIS 1-800 "mis"- information line.

You want them working on your petitions too?

In the old days(well I don't know how old hehe) I think the system was a lot faster. I only say that because I used to search about K-1 visas online before finding VJ and before filing(I filed before joining VJ so I used random websites to help me put together my file). I saw super fast timelines of people who filed in the late 90's and very early 2000's, pre- 9/11. But I think the increased amount of international relationships due to the smallness of the world now(b/c of internet), plus extra scrutiny due to 9/11, has overloaded a system still working with low budgets made for less petitions IMO. And I am not sure they(gov't) care enough to make it more of a really smooth system. I'd say the people working for the gov't are real people with feelings, but think about it...people get desensitized when they deal with something over and over and over again. It's a shame but I think it would happen to anyone.

There was a member who posted one time about their typical day working as a petition adjudicator. They worked there at one time or still worked there, I don't remember, but I am sure someone with good searching skills could find that somewhere on VJ. (I don't feel like it, hah and I am not a very skilled searcher).

With the fee hikes and all you should expect the USCIS to move faster. I see some improvements like they cash the check from my checking account quick loool.

As much as I hate being apart, I think it's probably wrong to place the blame (or at least all of it) on USCIS. They may enforce immigration laws, but they don't create them. The politicians in DC do that.

I know many here would like to believe that those working for USCIS could "bend" the rules for us at times, but how would they choose? Why would you get waived through and not me? These men and women are doing their job and we're simply "case files" to them. They see a ton of us every day, so we're not special.

Besides, if someone did "bend or break" the rules for an applicant, they might lose their job (and the applicant might still not get passed through anyway). The job they have is more important to them (and their family if they have one) than any of us getting together with our loved ones. They don't know us, so they're certainly not going to risk their job for a complete stranger they'll never meet.

I'm sure there are some "bad apples" who do find entertainment in preventing couples from getting together, but you'll find poor examples of people in any profession. None of us are so important (or perhaps, infamous) that any USCIS officer would pick us out of a crowd to harass us and only us.

Sometimes they don't follow the rules, that is where I have issues. But then again I am thinking about the consulate not the USCIS.

Perhaps you didn't realize this, but the call center is outsourced. They are not government employees.

And I wouldn't want the 1-800 number operators touching my various petitions with a ten foot pole, because they read off a script, usually give wrong information when they do give information and generally have no clue of the process. But that's just me :)
